Monarch Brew 12/4: Kings of Queen (City)

Monarchs Headed to Charlotte for Famous Toastery Bowl

Good Morning Monarchs. The good news is that you won’t have to travel through the seven layers of the Candy Cane forest to watch ODU in a bowl game! (Solid Elf reference for those who picked it up)

The Monarchs are headed to the Queen City against a familiar face and our women’s hoops squad continues to flex their muscles at a perfect 7️⃣-0️⃣.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🎳 QUEEN CITY, HERE WE COME!

The Monarchs are heading to the Queen City as ODU will go bowling for the second time in three seasons.

This time, it’ll in the Famous Toastery Bowl be against a familiar foe as they battle the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, a program that the Monarchs have played seven times previously as a former Conference USA opponent.

The two teams will take the field at Jerry Richardson Stadium on the campus of UNC Charlotte on Monday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Defenders of the Arc. For the first four weeks of the 2023-24 hoops season, ODU’s women’s squad ranked among the nation’s best on the defensive side of the court.

That test got a lot more challenging on Sunday as one of the country’s best long-range shooting teams, FGCU, came to town.

Test: Passed ✅

The Monarchs once again were absolutely stifling, holding the Eagles to just 42 points and 1-of-24 from long range. ODU now leads the country once again, allowing just 45.1 ppg defensively.

Senior Jordan McLaughlin posted her second straight 22-point performance with three 3-pointers and also adding six rebounds. En’Dya Buford added 13 points, while Simone Cunningham helped the Monarchs dominate the glass with a season-high 16 rebounds on the afternoon.

🔼 History Maker. It seems only right for it to be Ece.

For the past five seasons, Ece Turkoglu has been a foundational piece of 3️⃣ conference championships.

This weekend, she became a part of ODU’s record books forever, being named ODU’s first United Soccer Coaches All-American. The defensive midfielder and Monarch captain was named to the Third-Team by the organization.

She earned Sun Belt Conference Tournament MVP and All-Conference honors this season. Turkoglu was a First Team All-Southeast Region selection in 2023, a Third Team All-Southeast Region selection in 2022 and is a two-time College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honoree.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

For the past two weeks, ODU women’s hoops has ranked either first or second in the country in scoring defense.

After Sunday’s win, they vaulted past Washington back into the top spot nationally at 45.1 points allowed per game.

What is the program record for lowest scoring average allowed in a single-season?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 41.7

The 1972-73 squad allowed less than 42 points per game, which still stands as a program record today.
