Monarch Brew 8/21: It's All Coming Together

Three More Monarch Squads Get Underway This Week

Good Morning Monarchs. Last week, we got warmed up.

This week? It’s full go as the Blue and White are nearly full steam ahead with three more fall teams jumping into action.

Let’s get ready to go!

What else can we stir into today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

⚽️ Twice As Nice
👋 They’re Baackkkk
🌎 A Trip Of A Lifetime
👑 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Twice As Nice. We waited nine months to see the reigning Sun Belt champions in action on the pitch and man, are they rewarding us for our patience.

For the first time in 🖐 years, the ODU women’s soccer team is 2-0 after yet another shutout victory, this time a 2-0 win over Campbell in the home opener for the Monarchs.

ODU outshot Campbell, 18-4, and turned it up in the second half after a scoreless first.

Just over 15 minutes into the second half, Anna Torslov delivered a feed to sophomore Andrea Balcazar Algarin, who drilled it home for a 1-0 lead. About 15 minutes after that, the captain, Ece Turkoglu gave the Monarchs breathing room with her second goal in as many games to help seal the 2-0 win.

ODU has allowed just eight shots so far this season and for the first time since 2006, the Monarchs posted shutouts in the first two games of the year.

🔼 Three’s Company. This weekend, our ODU women’s soccer crew got us off to a strong start, now three more squads are ready to get it rolling.

First up, the ODU men’s soccer squad, who welcomes George Washington to Norfolk on Thursday night for a 7 pm season opener for both squads.

The weekend includes, the volleyball squad hosting the Quest for the Crown tournament, including games against VCU on Friday (6:30 pm) and Norfolk State on Saturday (6 pm).

Lastly, the reigning Big EAST regular season champions, ODU field hockey team opens up the season against perennial NCAA Tournament team, Delaware on Sunday at 12 p.m.

🔼 Trip Of A Lifetime. Sure there was incredible sights, great food and some good competition involved, but the memories came with the conversations shared.

This summer, the ODU volleyball team traveled through Spain and it allowed time for bonding, but also reflection on what has been built by the “Founding Mothers” of the Monarchs.

In the latest Max with Minium, we get an inside look at the trip, the memories and a little glimpse at the future.

🔼 Fresh New Digs. After a thrilling 2-0 season opening home win on Sunday, the ODU women’s soccer team returned to their fresh, new women’s locker room unveiled this fall.

Coach Hind helped generate over $100,000 from supporters to turn the locker room into something that the girls can be filled with Monarch Pride.

Max with Minium takes a deeper look into what the new digs means to the Monarchs themselves, and the program as a whole.

🔼 Dynamic Duo. The BIG EAST preseason poll for field hockey was released late last week and it was a two-for-two for ODU.

Marlon de Bruijne was named preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Big East. Nicole Fredricks joined de Bruijne as the other Monarch on the First team All-Big East Team.

de Bruijne was a unanimous selection for First team All-Big East and was selected as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year after winning the award last season. de Bruijne accumulated 14 goals, six assists and 34 points for the Monarchs last season.

Fredricks was named to the preseason All-Big East team as well. Fredricks is the captain of the team and controls the back line. She started in 16 games last season and recorded two assists for two points. She has been named to the Big East All-Conference second team in her freshman and sophomore year.

Terry Jones and Tre Hawkins III led the way with two picks apiece.

ODU’s highest single-season total is 15, which occurred in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

The Lombardi Watch List is one of several for Henderson, as he was also named to the preseason lists for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Butkus Awards.

With just two seasons under his belt, Henderson is on the cusp of becoming just the fourth player in program history with 300+ career tackles.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 36.

Henderson enters 2023 with 264 total tackles. He would join Jordan Young (350), Craig Wilkins (340) and TJ Ricks (323) as the only players in program history who eclipsed the 300-tackle mark.

Have a great start to the week, y’all!
