Monarch Brew 10/23: In the Wicks Of Time

ODU, Wicks Pull Out Thriller Over App State

Good Morning Monarch Nation. Shake and Bake. Thunder and Lightning.

Not sure what nickname will stick for the duo of Keshawn Wicks and Kadarius Calloway, but whatever it is, it works as the two-headed monster once again played a huge role in another Monarch W.

And the final TD came just “in the wick(s) of time.”

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏈 MONARCH MANIA

You want excitement? The 2023 ODU football squad is definitely full of it.

In front of a jammed Ballard Stadium and national TV audience, the Monarchs pulled out a thrilling victory over perennial Sun Belt power, App State, 28-21, to earn their win in the past four games.

With the clock winding and App State holding onto a one-point lead, ODU put together a grind-it-out, 11-play, 69-yard drive that ended on a 16-yard TD run by Keshawn Wicks with less than a minute to go to claim a 28-21 lead.

App State would drive into ODU territory, but the Monarchs would come up with the stop when needed and hold on for the victory.

Kadarius Calloway and Wicks combined for 186 yards on 25 carries, with Wicks finishing with two TDs on the day. Junior QB Grant Wilson was terrific for the Blue & Gray, tossing 18-for-25 with 188 yards and a TD.

Defensively, the nation’s leading tackler was at it again with Jason Henderson piling up 16 takedowns on the day. Junior Terry Jones continued his outstanding season with 11 tackles and a critical pass breakup.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 On Cloud Nine. Uh oh. They let it happen. They let the ODU field hockey team get hot.

At this point, the Monarchs are way past hot, they are scorching.

It was another weekend sweep as ODU picked up wins over Quinnipiac (8-0) and James Madison (3-0) to make it 9️⃣ straight Ws. The Monarchs have now gone a full month without a single loss.

ODU has now not allowed a single goal in three straight games and have outscored the opposition 37-7 during the current win streak.

Sophomore Sacha de Gier and senior Marlon de Bruijne each had three goals on the weekend. de Gier’s three goals game in Friday’s win over Quinnipiac for her first career hat trick. de Bruijne continued her dominance as she has now scored in eight straight games for the Monarchs.

🔼 Clinched. How else would the 2023 Monarchs clinch the division title? With their defense obviously.

The ODU women’s soccer team used what’s been their anchor all fall long to clinch the Sun Belt East Division title with a 0-0 tie with visiting Georgia State on Sunday afternoon.

Junior keeper Emily Bredek set a single-season program record with her 10th shutout of the season. Bredek ranks second in the country in total shutouts.

With the 11th team shutout of the year, ODU now sits tied for second in the country in total shutouts and in the top-three nationally with a goals against average of 0.38.
