Monarch Brew 10/11: Built Different

Henderson's Big Day Earns Weekly Accolades

Good Morning Monarchs! One thing is for sure. This man is built differently.

For the past two seasons, every ODU fan has seen what the entire football world will soon understand. Jason Henderson is that guy.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏈 Built Different
🏀 It’s Coming
⚽️ Getting Defensive
👑 And much, much more!

🏈 BUILT DIFFERENT

“Tackle by Jason Henderson.”
“#42 gets behind the line of scrimmage for the tackle”
“Henderson comes out of nowhere for the takedown”

Those phrases and many more have been said over and over and over again throughout the years. In fact, it’s been 356 times exactly as Jason Henderson became the program’s all-time leading tackler this past weekend.

With his 17 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and a sack this past weekend, the Dingman Ferrys, Pa. native earned his second Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week honor of the year. A day later, he was named the Bednarik Award Player of the Week as well.

He passed former ODU linebacker Jordan Young with his 351st career when he was the first to hit Tiaquelin Mims for a five-yard loss at the ODU 14 early in the third quarter. It was a key play, in that it forced the Golden Eagles to kick a field goal.

"He's earned every single tackle that he's made," said ODU head coach Ricky Rahne. "He's a warrior. He's played his tail off ever since he got here."

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Making It Count. One thing is for sure. Senior Marlon de Bruijne is making her final collegiate season count.

After piling up three goals and an assist last week, de Bruijne helped her ODU field hockey squad to two wins and was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week accolades.

She currently leads the team with 22 points and 10 goals.

Nicole Fredricks was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as she commanded the defensive back line for the Monarchs which only surrendered one goal over the weekend on a penalty stroke.

🔼 Time To Shine. ODU faithful, let’s leave our mark.

We’ve got our chance to show Ballard off to a whole new audience as it was announced that next week’s showdown with Appalachian State will now be seen on the NFL Network at 7 p.m.

It marks the first time in program history that the Monarchs will be on the NFL Network.

🔼 It’s Coming. 26 days. Roughly 635 hours.

That’s all that stands between us and the start of the ODU men’s hoops season! It’s coming!

Two weeks from tonight, the Monarchs will host the Trojans of Virginia State in an exhibition contest at Chartway Arena at 7 p.m.

🔼 Getting Defensive. If Jason Henderson wasn’t supplying enough defense for you, the ODU women’s soccer team has you covered.

With just four games left in the regular season, the Monarchs currently lead the COUNTRY in goals against average at just 0.31 goals allowed per game. The Blue & Gray have allowed just four goals in 13 games this season.

The scoreless draw against JMU on Sunday was the ninth shutout of the year for ODU, which is now just two shutouts shy of a single-season program record.

💪 RIVALRY RENEWED

TowneBank is a longstanding supporter of college athletics, and we are excited to cheer along the healthy competition for the second year of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge between Old Dominion University and James Madison University.

We are fortunate to have a strong alumni base on both sides of the rivalry within the Towne family, and we look forward to seeing who will hoist the crown for the 2023-2024 academic year.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Leading The Pack. Halfway through the 2023 season, Jason Henderson is sitting in a familiar place.

After his 17-tackle, historic performance in the win over USM, Henderson finds himself atop the total tackles category among all Division I players.

With 186 tackles last year, he led the country and he currently sits at 92 through six games, 16 more than any other player in the nation.

Who was the last player to lead all Division I in total tackles?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Luke Kuechley (Boston College)

The future All-Pro for the Carolina Panthers was a menace for Boston College, leading the country in tackles in 2010 (183) and 2011 (191). He racked up 532 tackles in 38 collegiate games before becoming a top-10 overall pick by Carolina in the 2012 NFL Draft.

🦁 Have a great Wednesday, Monarchs!
