🔼 High Five. Five of the best Monarchs recently received a phone call they’ll never forget as ODU has announced its 2023 ODU Athletic Hall of Fame class that will be honored on September 23rd this fall.

A two-sport standout, a former defensive tackle from the early days of FCS football, a women's soccer member of the first NCAA Tournament team and a pair of golfers will be a part of this year’s class.

Lisa Bernardini DeJohn (Women's Lacrosse/Women's Soccer), Ronnie Cameron (Football), Samantha Morrell (Women's Golf), Eric Onesi (Men's Golf) and Katie Watson (Women's Soccer) will receive the honor on the morning of the ODU Football game against Texas A&M University-Commerce to highlight Homecoming Weekend.

🔼 Secure Your Seat. Trying to set your plans for the fall? Make sure your secure your tickets NOW!

That’s right, ODU Football Mini Plans and Single Game tickets are now on sale and with a great slate of home games, an exciting roster and coming off the highest single-season attendance record in program history… you don’t want to miss out!

🔼 Eye On The Prize. One step closer.

As a player, she’s got two Olympic and World Cup gold medals. As a coach, she’s got a FIBA U18 World Gold Medal.

Now, ODU women’s basketball head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones is chasing a second coaching gold medal with the 2023 USA Basketball Women’s U19 World Cup Team.

The squad is one step closer after a dominating 112-36 win over Argentina in the Round of 16. Next up for the Americans is a 9:30 AM matchup today with the Czech Republic.

Games can be streamed through FIBA.Basketball.com.

🔼 Romania For Reek. While he was only in Norfolk for one season, he quickly became a fan favorite.

Now, Tyreek Scott-Grayson will look to do the same in Romania as he signed a professional deal to join CSM Timisoara.

Last year for the Monarchs, he finished second on the team in scoring (13.4 ppg), while also grabbing 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

He scored 25+ points on three occasions, including a 30-point outburst at George Mason, which put him over 1,000 career collegiate points. He led the Monarchs last year with 41 3-pointers.

🔼 Heart of A Champion. It’s amazing how sports can bring people together.

Several years ago, Dr. Wood Selig’s children were playing tennis and started playing locally. Selig starts chatting up some of the parents and becomes friends with the Sarris family.

And that’s where the heart of gold comes in.

Ever since a few of those initial conversations, Dr. Sarris and members of the Sentara Heart Hospital have been giving almost nearly all ODU athletes, including every one in a contact sport, a full cardiac exam before stepping on the field of competition.

It proved crucial this past year in two incidents for the ODU family.

This is a story, you don’t want to miss!

🏈 SCOUTING REPORT: APP STATE

Opponent #7: Appalachian State
Date: Saturday, October 21st
Location: Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium — Norfolk, Va.
Time: TBA
Broadcast Coverage: ODU Sports Radio Network

Last Meeting: App State 27, Old Dominion 14 - Nov. 19, 2022
All-Time Series: App State leads 3-0

Famous Alumni Battle:

ODU: Nancy Lieberman (Basketball Hall of Famer), Justin Verlander (MLB All-Star), Taylor Heinicke (NFL QB), Jay Harris (ESPN Anchor), Ben Bailey (host of Cash Cab), William Fallon (Four Star Navy Admiral)
Appalachian State: Dexter Coakley (NFL LB, College Football Hall of Fame), Luke Combs (Country Musician), Alvin Gentry (Former NBA Head Coach with six teams), Eric Church (Country Musician), Harry Williams (President and CEO of Thurgood Marshall Fund), Melissa Morrison-Howard (Olympic Medalist).

App State has proven to be one of the stables at the top of the Sun Belt for years now. They’ve won the East Division three of the past four years and have four Sun Belt Conference Championships in the past decade.

Last season, the Mountaineers started hot with a win over a top-10 Texas A&M team, but stumbled down the stretch, losing three of its last four games to miss a bowl game for the first time since 2014.

App State has always been able to run the ball and last year was no different as they averaged over 200+ yards per game and ranked 21st in the country in that category. The offense line is talented and loaded up even more when they added a Georgia transfer, Griffin Scroggs, during the spring season.

The biggest question will be at QB where the Mountaineers have to replace Chase Brice, who was a solid starter for App State. The battle is between redshirt freshman Ryan Burger and junior Joey Aguilar.

For ODU, the Monarchs will look to topple the Mountaineers for the first time in program history, after its fourth quarter rally last year came up just short in Boone, N.C.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 43 DAYS

With 43 days left before the 2023 season, we’re going to honor one of the foundational pieces for the ODU program: David Washington.

Washington was one of the more elite athletes to play for the Monarchs, coming in as a quarterback, but moving to WR with Taylor Heinicke under center, but moving back to QB after Heinicke’s graduation.

The Raleigh, N.C. native finished his career earning All-Conference accolades in the Conference USA at QB and tossing for 43 career TDs, the third most in program history.
