🏆 TITLETOWN

What a Sunday for the Monarchs!

Two titles. Two trips to the NCAA Tournament. Two more rings.

The ODU field hockey and women’s soccer teams provided the Monarchs with a historic day, marking the first time in athletic department history that ODU won two conference titles on the same day.

For the first time in program history, the Monarchs are BIG EAST Champions after a 3-1 defeat of #6 Liberty on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.

With the win, ODU extended its win streak to 12 games and is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Nicole Fredericks was named the Tournament MVP, while Marlon de Bruijne, Sacha de Gier and Frederique Zandbergen were all named to the All-Tournament team.

Another year. Another hoisting of the trophy.

The ODU women’s soccer team won another thriller en route to their third straight conference championship (2021 in Conference USA, 2022 and 2023 in the Sun Belt).

Freshman Sydney Somers scored with less than two minutes to play in the second OT to push the Monarchs past in-state rival JMU to capture the title and earn a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Senior captain Ece Turkoglu was named Tournament MVP after helping lead another stout defensive effort, allowing just two goals in the entire tournament run. She also added a goal in the championship game to her resume.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Now That’s Brotherly Love. The power of siblings was on display by the duo of Codie and Connor van Schalkwyk.

Under the sunny skies of San Diego, the duo made an incredible run to the ITA Fall National finals on the double court, falling to third-seeded Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon of Michigan State on Sunday.

The duo had an incredible week, going 4-1 including a win over the 13th-ranked duo from TCU on Saturday in the semifinals.

The run by Codie van Schalkwyk and Connor van Schalkwyk came to an end on Sunday as they dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to third-seeded Ozan Baris and Max Sheldon of Michigan State at the Barnes Tennis Center.

"Now about Codie and Connor, what a great Fall. Making the Fall Nationals final is a massive accomplishment and I'm so proud of them for that," said Lalami. They represented ODU amazingly with their tennis and sportsmanship and fully deserve this run and the ranking that will come with it."

🔼 Sweeping Our Way Through the Weekend. What’s the best way to honor your foundational pieces? Playing for them.

That’s exactly what the ODU volleyball team did over the weekend with two sweeps of Georgia State on a weekend where the Monarchs honored their senior class.

With the two wins, ODU tied a single-season record for wins in a season with 13 in the four-year history of the program.

Junior Myah Conway continued her outstanding season with 31 kills in the two matches, while senior Teresa Atilano finished her home career with 72 assists in the two victories.

🔼 To The Wire. One thing is for sure, the ODU football team isn’t a big fan of fingernails.

The fingernails of everyone following the Monarchs have been chewed to the end with close game after close game. Saturday at home against Coastal Carolina was no different.

ODU would battle the Chanticleers to the wire, but fall short as CCU would get a touchdown with under 30 seconds to play to pull out a 28-24 victory.
