The first shot for a conference championship begins today when the ODU women’s soccer team starts its title defense at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament.

Add in destiny in the hands of the ODU football team and we’ve got quite a BIG week in Monarch Nation.

The title defense starts now.

ODU women’s soccer is the first Monarch squad to go trophy hunting in 2023-24 with the Sun Belt Conference Tournament underway in Foley, Ala.

Today, the Monarchs will start their quest against seventh-seeded Georgia State. The two teams battled less than two weeks ago, finishing in a 0-0 draw in Norfolk on Oct. 22.

🔼 Dynamic Duo. All season long, the ODU women’s soccer team put one of the country’s best defenses on display each night.

Two of the mainstays of that defensive effort were honored this week when junior goalkeeper Emily Bredek was named Goalkeeper of the Year and First Team All-Conference, while senior Ece Turkoglu joined her on the first team by the Sun Belt with the announcement of the yearly accolades.

Bredek became the first Monarch to win an individual honor with her Goalkeeper of the Year award. The Huntington Beach, California native is having a season for the record books as she is fifth nationally in goals against average at 0.418 and seventh in shutouts with an ODU record 10. Bredek has been among the national leaders all season in goals against average, shutouts and save percentage.

This marks the fifth straight All-Conference award for Turkoglu who was a three-time Conference USA selection before earning the honor last year in the Sun Belt.

The calendar has turned to November and that only means that ODU hoops is BACK!

🔼 Toe-To-Toe. In a conference that features three programs ranked in the top-10 nationally, ODU continues to show that they can go toe-to-toe with any of them.

In the regular season finale, the Monarchs did that once again, taking #2 West Virginia to the wire, earning a PK goal in the final 10 minutes to equal things at 1, but the Mountaineers got a PK goal of their own in the final minute to pull out the 2-1 win.

With the other league results on Tuesday night, the Monarchs earned a spot in the upcoming 2023 Sun Belt Tournament. They will be the eighth seed and play top-seeded Marshall in the opening round at Marshall on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Another Saturday.
Another critical showdown for the Monarchs.

Coming off a strong showing against #23 JMU on the road last week, ODU returns home to take on Coastal Carolina in a HUGE Sun Belt Conference showdown.

With three games to play on the league slate for the Monarchs, ODU is tied with Coastal, Georgia Southern and Georgia State, all whom have three wins this season.

Those three are the final three opponents for the Monarchs and with JMU ineligible, ODU’s destiny remains in their hands.

Last year, the Monarchs took home the Sun Belt title and in 2021, it was the Conference USA title.
