🏆 CHIP HUNTING

Two teams.
One goal: Chip Hunting.

The ODU women’s soccer and field hockey teams are both looking to earn a spot in their respective conference title games today with semifinal showdowns set for this afternoon and evening.

First up, the field hockey team takes its 10-game winning streak into a matchup with third-seeded Temple. It’s a repeat of last year’s BIG EAST semifinal where ODU won in penalty strokes. The Monarchs defeated the Owls earlier this season in Norfolk, 1-0, to start the current win streak.

Play gets underway from Philadelphia at 4 p.m.

At 5 pm, we head south to Foley, Ala. where the ODU women’s soccer team looks to earn a second straight conference championship game berth when it meets third-seeded Georgia Southern.

The two teams met earlier this fall in Statesboro with the Monarchs pulling out a 2-1 victory over the Eagles.

In the quarterfinal showdown on Wednesday, ODU got a goal in the final six minutes of action from freshman Ashlynn Kulha to earn a 1-0 victory over Georgia State.

🏈 DESTINY IN OUR HANDS

With three games to play on the league slate for the Monarchs, ODU is tied with Coastal, Georgia Southern and Georgia State, all whom have three wins this season.

Those three are the final three opponents for the Monarchs and with JMU ineligible, ODU’s destiny remains in their hands.

Another Saturday.
Another critical showdown for the Monarchs.

This Saturday, ODU also hosts its Military Appreciation Day, honoring the servicemen and women who protect our country.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 High Five. The trophy case for ODU field hockey is getting a little more full.

Five different players were named to the BIG EAST All-Conference teams by the league’s coaches.

Suus Broers was named BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year. Marlon de Bruijne, Frederique Zandbergen and Nicole Fredericks were named first team All-Conference. Broers and Sacha de Gier were named to the All-Conference second team.

🔼 I-Say-Yah. No turning the Paige on this guy.

ODU wide reciever Isiah Paige was announced as the Monarchs’ nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy.

The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding football player in America who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field. Each nominee must have begun his first season of participation with FBS (D1) football program without financial aid of any kind from his university's athletic department.

Paige leads the Monarchs with 26 catches for 232 yards. He also has returned four punts for 12 yards.

A native of Richmond, Virginia, Paige earned CUSA honorable mention honors as a punt returner in 2021. In his career, he has 65 receptions for 557 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

🔼 One Last Stand. For one final time, the ODU volleyball team will take the court at home tonight.

Last night, the Monarchs opened their final homestand in emphatic fashion, dominating Georgia State, 3-0.

Junior Myah Conway led the way offensively, hitting at a .448 clip and finishing with 14 kills. She also added two aces, five blocks and eight digs to her match totals.

Senior Olivia De Jesus finished with eight kills and four blocks in one of her final home matches, while classmate Teresa Atilano added 35-assists on the night.

Tonight, the two teams will meet again at 6:30 with the Monarchs honoring their seniors prior to the match. De Jesus, Atilano, as well as Kira Smith and Tessa Mati will all be recognized for their contributions to the program.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

In the first-ever meeting between ODU and Coastal Carolina, Taylor Heinicke put on a show like he seemed to do oh so many times for the Monarchs.

This time, it was in the 2012 FCS Playoffs and he etched his name in the record books yet again.

In that 63-35 win at CCU, what national record did Heinicke set and it still remains to this day?

Got a guess?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Single-game NCAA FCS Playoff record for total offense (542 yards).

Heinicke threw for 497 yards and tied a playoff record with six touchdown passes. He was 32-of-44 passing for 497 yards and six TD's and also added 45 yards on the ground.

The total broke Todd Hammel's (Stephen F. Austin) record of 539 yards of total offense that he set in 1989 against Grambling.
