Monarch Brew 12/22: Future So Bright, We Need New Shades

Monarchs Ink 18 on National Signing Day

TGIF Monarchs. Might want to add a new pair of sunglasses to that Christmas list.

The future in Norfolk continues to get brighter and brighter after another big signing day for the Monarchs. it’s getting so bright, you’re might need two pairs of shades.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

😎 Future So Bright
👑 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Future So Bright, We Need Sunglasses. There’s something special about joining the ODU family.

18 incoming Monarchs will find that out as they’ve officially signed on to join the Blue & Grey next season as part of National Day Signing Day 2024.

🔼 Island Boys. One thing is for sure, the offense traveled quite well.

The ODU men’s hoops team hit the courts on Thursday against one of the hottest teams in the country in TCU, and gave the Horned Frogs everything they had, but fell in a all-out shootout, 111-87, in the opener of the Diamond Head Classic.

Freshman Vasean Allette had his third 20+ point performance in the past four games with a game-high 25 points, along with a season-high four steals and five rebounds. Tyrone Williams added 15 points and grabbed three steals of his own as the Monarchs tallied 13 on the day as a team.

🔼 Star Of Stars. We’re going to need a few different pieces of paper for Ece Turkoglu’s 2023 resume.

This week, she added yet another honor to that list.

Turkoglu was named to the First Team United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American squad.

To be eligible for selection, candidates must be at least a junior in academic standing and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.40 for their career. Players must also have played in at least 75 percent of the season's games, contributed significantly to the team's success and be an elite player as evidenced by athletic accolades for the season.

🔼 Class Acts. The success and tenacity of the ODU football team was on display all season long.

The Monarchs battled their way to a second bowl bid in three seasons and tallied the most one-score games in the country.

Off the field and in the classroom, that success was just as high.

As Coach Rahne said above, the team GPA for the fall season was a 3.02 with 26 student-athletes on the Dean’s List.

Well done fellas!

🔼 Regroup & Refocus. The challenge was tall, but ODU gave it their all.

Brenda Fontana scored 12 points and gave the Monarchs a lead mid-way through the first half against third-ranked NC State, but the Wolfpack used a late first half surge to claim a lead they wouldn’t relinquish en route to a 87-50 defeat of ODU.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Ece Turkoglu’s academic honor added to a long list of resume of this season.

The honor is the third such accolade in program history.

Which other two Monarchs claimed the recognition for ODU?
