Monarch Brew 9/15: High Noon Showdown - Be There

ODU Welcomes National Audience To Ballard

Good morning Monarchs. Sure, the Tidewater area has plenty of great brunch places to hit up on a beautiful Saturday.

Buttttt.. what’s better than brunch at Ballard and a high noon showdown?

Nothing, absolutely nothing is the answer to that.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏈 HIGH NOON SHOWDOWN

For the second straight season, an ACC opponent is coming to Norfolk.

This time, Wake Forest visits Ballard Stadium for the first time in program history after their 2020 visit was cancelled.

After an absolute thriller last Saturday over an upstart Louisiana squad, the Monarchs will look to continue their momentum against a 2-0 Wake Forest team that has notched wins against Elon (37-17) and Vanderbilt (36-20).

The Demon Deacons will be playing their first road game of the 2023 season.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Sweepin’ Those Country Roads. The brooms traveled well to Morgantown for the ODU volleyball team as the Monarchs swept through the first two matches of the Mountaineer Invite on Thursday.

26 kills from Myah Conway and 68 assists from Teresa Atilano highlighted two dominant 3-0 victories over West Virginia and Robert Morris for the Blue and White. The win over WVU is the first-ever victory over a Power 5 school in the short program history.

The Monarchs will go for the tournament sweep when they face North Dakota State at noon. The Bison are a perennial contender in the Summit League and are coming off a 20+ win season last fall.

🔼 Our Leader. Coming off a golden summer with Team USA, DeLisha Milton-Jones locked down her future plans and those plans are right here in Norfolk.

ODU and Coach Milton-Jones announced a contract extension this week that keeps her with the Monarchs through 2028.

During her three seasons at ODU, the Monarchs have compiled a 59-33 (.641) overall record with a 31-21 (.596) mark in league play. During that time, her teams have reached the conference tournament semifinals twice (Conference USA in 2021 and Sun Belt in 2023) as well as making it to the second round of the WNIT in 2022.

"It is a wonderful feeling knowing that my vision is supported and my work is appreciated. I thank Dr. Wood Selig for believing in me while on my quest to bring back the historical prominence of this program," said Milton-Jones.

🔼 No, We Won’t Back Down. Not sure if Tom Petty could see the future or not, but if he could, then he might have written the song about the 2023 ODU Monarch field hockey squad.

The reigning BIG EAST regular season champions continue their gauntlet of a schedule with two more top-10 opponents this weekend, both on the road.

ODU will travel to 10th-ranked Liberty later today and head to #9 Duke on Sunday.

🎾 HOLDING COURT

We love our local partners!

Thanks to a great partnership with the Norfolk Yacht & Country Club, the ODU men’s tennis program will host the first-ever NYCC College Tennis Invitational next week.

Local tennis powers Virginia Tech, JMU, William & Mary and College of Charleston will all come to Norfolk for three days of high-level collegiate tennis.

🤝 EARLY DETECTION

Prostate Cancer is more common than you might think. The average age of diagnosis is 66. If you’re 45 years of age as an African American male, or 50 for other groups, you need to be screened for prostate cancer. Early detection can save lives. Talk to your provider this month to see if screening is right for you. Sentara.

Improving health every day.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Connect Four. Last Saturday, junior QB Grant Wilson made a stellar debut in front of the home crowd tossing for four TDs in ODU’s thrilling win over Louisiana.

Wilson became the first Monarch QB to throw for four or more TDs in a game since Blake LaRussa in 2018.

How many different Monarchs have thrown for 4+ TDs in a game?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Five.

Wilson’s performance on Saturday made him the fifth Monarch in program history to reach the 4+ passing TDs milestone. He joined LaRussa (1x), David Washington (2x), Thomas DeMarco (3x) and some guy named Heinicke (6x).

🦁 Have a great weekend, y’all! Go Blue!
