📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Off and Running. One down, more to come.

A crowd of over 5,000 got the first real glimpse of the ODU men’s hoops team, who opened up the 2023-24 season with a 71-57 victory over nearby Virginia Wesleyan.

Chaunce Jenkins led ODU with 16 points and Oregon transfer Tyrone Williams added 15 as the duo powered the offensive side of the court for the Monarchs.

ODU outrebounded the Marlins, 49-33, and outscored them in the paint, 38-18.

With plenty of newcomers to the roster, Coach Jones gave his thoughts on the opener.

"I guess in a lot of ways, tonight is what you would expect of a season opener," Jones said. "There were stretches where I thought we played really, really well and then there was some where I thought we were just kind of sloppy."

🔼 Coming Together. With two-thirds of the roster completely new, the ODU women’s hoops team is gelling and it showed on opening night.

10 newcomers joined five returnees for the Monarchs, who powered their way to a 72-50 win over Lincoln (Pa.) in the season opener for both teams.

En’Dya Buford put on a show in her ODU debut, impressing with her speed and athleticism to lead all scorers with 14 points, as well as six assists and two steals for the transfer from Jones Junior College.

Returning starter Kaye Clark had 13 points and six steals and Mikayla Brown, also a returnee, added 10 points and seven rebounds.

🔼 Three’s Company. Stop us if you’ve heard this before.

Jason Henderson was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week. Oh, you have heard that? Wait, two other times this year?

That’s right, the monster LB earned his third conference weekly award with a career performance on Saturday, racking up 22 tackles, which tied his own school record from last season.

He also added three tackles for a loss and 1.5 sacks.

The Dingmans Ferry, Pa. native still holds the nationally lead in total tackles on the year with 141 and now also leads the country in TFLs with 18.

💃 DANCIN’ WITH THE MONARCHS

Strap on those dancin’ shoes Monarchs!

We’re hitting the road and we’ve got two dance partners waiting for us!

For a third straight year, the ODU women’s soccer team is heading to the NCAA Tournament.

This time, it’s a short trip to the nation’s capital this Saturday afternoon as the Monarchs will head to Shaw Field on the campus of Georgetown University to take on the Hoyas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

ODU sits at 13-2-5 on the year and is coming off its third straight conference title. Georgetown took home the BIG EAST championship and sits at 12-1-7 on the year.

This will be the first matchup between the Monarchs and Hoyas. The winner will advance to face the winner of Saint Louis and Indiana.

Make it two short trips for the Monarchs as the ODU field hockey team will head to College Park on Friday for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Monarchs will take on #4 Maryland in the first round of the 18-team field tournament. Game time against the Terps on Friday is set for 12 p.m.

ODU clinched their first bid to the NCAA Tournament since 2013 with a 3-1 win over #6 Liberty in the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

In the season opener, Chaunce Jenkins was in a familiar place, the leading scorer for the Monarchs.

After transferring to ODU from Wichita State last year, Jenkins earned All-Conference accolades and lit up the scoring column last season.

This year, he started with 16 points in the first win of the year.

How many times in his one-plus year with the Monarchs has Jenkins scored 15+ points?

Got a guess?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 14.

Jenkins has now scored 15 or more points in nearly half of his career games at ODU. He has reached that mark in 14 of his 32 games as Monarch, including five 20+ point outings last year.

🦁 Have a great day, ODU fam!
