Monarch Brew 9/27: We Talkin' About Practice?

Monarchs Hoops Squads Hit the Courts for First Official Practices

Good Monday Morning Monarch Nation. The squeaking of sneakers. The sweat drench jerseys. The swish of a net.

Who doesn’t love the first signs of hoops season!

We are 4️⃣0️⃣ days away from the start of the 2023-24 season and practice is officially underway!

What else do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

👑 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Hoop Dreams. It’s been over six months since we last saw the Monarch hoops squads on the hardwood.

Now, we’re just 40 days away.

Both teams returned to the hardwood for the first official practices of the 2023-24 season as they prepare to make noise in the Sun Belt this season.

🔼 Spectacular Settin’. Late September is now declared, “Atilano Season.”

For the third straight year, senior Teresa Atilano of the ODU volleyball team has taken home a conference weekly honor in late September. This time, she was named Sun Belt Setter of the Week after a dominating week for the Monarchs.

The San Diego, California native led the league this past week with 130 assists while averaging 10.83 per set. She also recorded double-doubles in all three of ODU's matches, helping the Monarchs to a 2-1 record with wins over Liberty and Marshall.

This marks Atilano's third career weekly honor. She was named the Conference USA Setter of the Week on Sept. 20, 2021 and earned Sun Belt Setter of the Week on Sept. 27 last season.

🔼 High-Level Hosts. This past weekend, ODU men’s tennis squad opened up a new era thanks to a partnership with the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club.

In the first-ever NYCC Collegiate Invitational, the Monarchs had a splendid weekend of competition that brought together some of the region’s best talent right here in Norfolk.

ODU sophomore Codie van Schalkwyk earned the singles championship after posting a perfect 3-0 weekend.

🔼 Country Roads. For the first time in nearly a month, the ODU football team is hitting the roads.

In fact, you could say they are hitting the country roads as they head to West Virginia to take on Sun Belt rival, Marshall, in a 3:30 pm showdown on Saturday on ESPN+.

The Thundering Herd continue to prove to be a thorn in the Monarchs’ side with Marshall winning seven of the previous eight meetings, including a 12-0 win last year and an OT win in 2021.

🤝 HELPING HANDS

“Be the change you want to see in the world”

So incredibly grateful for our student-athletes to be able to be a part of the Monarchs Give Back campaign that was hugely successful yet again this year and impacted so many in our community!

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

National Treasure. As a freshman, Teresa Atilano dished out 586 assists in 18 total matches.

Now, four years later, entering her final season with ODU, we’d have to say, she’s become a treasure for Monarch Nation.

The Monarchs just started conference play and the veteran setter has already surpassed that first year total with 596 in the first 16 matches of the season, averaging nearly 10 assists per set.

Her 596 assists rank among the best in the country. Exactly where does she rank among the nation’s leaders in that category?
