Monarch Brew 8/16: In Good Company

Current and Former Monarchs Amongst the Elite

Good morning Monarchs. We’ve all heard the line at some time or another from our parents, “You are the company you keep.”

For some of our current and former Monarchs, that’s some pretty high praise as they walked among some of the finest in all walks of life recently.

We’ve got all the details and we’ll get you set for the first game of the 2023-24 Monarch athletic year.

What else can we stir into today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏀 Call To The Hall
📝 The List Keeps Growing…
🇺🇸 Salute To Service
👑 And much, much more!

🔼 Call To The Hall (x2). Nancy Lieberman is no stranger to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. She was inducted into the elite club in 1996.

She was back in Springfield, Mass. this past weekend as her and her 1976 USA Women’s Olympic team was part of the 2023 Class.

🔼 We got any more paper?!? We’re beginning to worry that this preseason list might be too long for us.

This week, he was named to the Bednarik Award Watch List given to the outstanding defensive player in college football, the Maxwell Football Club.

The Bednarik Award has been presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year since 1994 and is named in honor of Chuck "Concrete Charlie" Bednarik who was an All-American player at the University of Pennsylvania and later a multiple year All Pro linebacker and center for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Earlier this month Henderson earned Nagurski (Defensive Player of the Year) and Butkus Award (Top Linebacker) Watch Lists accolades.

🔼 Salute To Service. There’s no greater honor than to have the opportunity to thank the men and women who serve our country on the front lines.

Coach Jeff Jones is doing just that as he is spending time at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait as part of the 2023 Hardwood Classic, presented by the Troops First Foundation.

Coach Jones is one of four Division I head coaches on site interacting, coaching and spending time with the servicemen and women.

🔼 It’s GO TIME!. The wait is finally over. Game time is here.

It’s been over nine months, but the reigning Sun Belt Conference Champions are ready to take the pitch for the 2023 season opener.

The Monarchs are back looking for a third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and the quest to reach the postseason begins on TOMORROW with a trip up the interstate to in-state and longtime rival, George Mason for a 6 p.m. showdown.

🔼 Helping Hands. “Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in life, it’s about what you inspire others to do.”

For ODU football players, the summer has been filled with hard work on the field and in the weight room. But their most important work is nothing close to football.

Now in it’s third year of the mentoring program, ODU football players have been spending time with the students at Blair Middle School, talking to them about school, life, and maybe even a little football tossed in there.

The latest edition of Max with MInium takes a deep dive into the relationship between the Monarchs and Blair.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 17 DAYS

September 13, 2014.
Sold Out Foreman Field.
First-Ever FBS Home Game.

It was a night many of the ODU faithful won’t forget as the Monarchs flexed their muscles right away at the FBS level, dominating Eastern Michigan that night.

ODU scored 17 points in the win and held EMU to a then program record three points with a suffocating defensive effort.

It was the first home FBS win in school history.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

In that thrilling win back in 2014, ODU found themselves holding on to a seven-point lead with under eight minutes to play in the first FBS home game in Norfolk.

That lead grew to 14 when the Monarchs took a punt to the house from 46 yards out to seal the win.

Which former ODU standout scored on the aforementioned punt return?

Got a guess?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Antonio Vaughn.

Vaughn remains one of the greatest playmakers in ODU history and finished that 2014 season with over 1,000 yards receiving and 12 TDs, fourth-most in the country.

He twice earned All-Conference accolades during his time in Norfolk.

Have a great Wednesday, ya’ll!
