Monarch Brew 2/14: Love & Basketball

Lady Monarchs Host Coastal Carolina In Sun Belt Showdown

Happy Valentine’s Day ODU Fam. Nearly 24 years ago, the world was introduced to a bus trip classic, Love & Basketball. Spike Lee brought us the love story of Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, combining hoops and romance in the cult classic.

Now, tonight, you can combine those same two things with date night at Chartway Arena!

We’ve got all the details and much more in today’s edition of the Brew!

🔼 Love & Basketball. Valentine’s Day is all about spending the night with the ones you love and that’s exactly what the ODU women’s hoops team will be doing at Chartway Arena TONIGHT.

The Lady Monarchs are back in Norfolk for just the second time in the past three weeks looking to continue their strong play as ODU has won five of its past six entering tonight’s matchup with Coastal Carolina.

With three weeks left in the regular season, the Lady Monarchs sit in fourth place in the Sun Belt standings, but just a game out of second place.

🔼 Youth Movement. This week, the ODU women’s golf program enjoyed a youth movement.

Sophomore Lucia Gonzalez and freshman Puneet Bajwa both carded two-unders at the Columbia Classic in Melbourne, Fla. to help the Lady Monarchs claim a third-place finish among a talented field.

Gonzalez fired two rounds under 70, while Bajwa held steady throughout the weekend with a 69-72-73.

We like our Brew hot n’ fresh. But we’re not opposed to you reheating your cup. Here’s some news you may have missed recently…

🔼 Game Week. The time has come. Game week is officially here.

It’s been eight months since the ODU baseball team was last in action, but that is finally over this week. The Monarchs open the 2024 slate this weekend for the final season at The Bud with a three-game set against George Washington.

Last year, ODU finished 32-23 overall and became the first NCAA Division I program to hit 100 home runs in a season in three straight years since the start of the BBCOR era in 2011.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Over the next week, MLB squads from all over will report to officially start Spring Training 2024.

Next Monday, the Kansas City will begin their work, which includes the returner of former Monarch Vinnie Pasquantino, who missed a majority of last season with a shoulder injury.

Pasquantino has the most ABs at the MLB level by any former Monarch. How many HRs does he have in his 133 games at the big league level?

Got a guess?
