Monarch Brew 12/13: He's Making A List...

Henderson Adds Two More All-American Honors

Good Morning Monarchs. This time of year, there’s lots of lists being made.

We know the big guy up north makes his list and you can bet everything you own that Mr. Henderson is going on that nice list (at least for us ODU fans, maybe not so much for the opponents) after yet another season of domination.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 As (All) American As….. Pretty soon, we’re going to be filling in Jason Henderson in place of the traditional “apple pie” answer.

The star-studded junior linebacker added two more All-American honors to a rapidly growing list after he was name named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) second team and the Associated Press (AP) second team earlier this week.

Last week, Henderson received first-team All-America accolades from Walter Camp and College Football News and second-team All-America honors from USA Today, The Athletic and CBS Sports.

Henderson is looking to become the first player since Boston College's Luke Kuechly to lead the country in tackles in back-to-back years. He leads the country with 170 tackles and 14.2 tackles per game and is third in the nation with 19.5 tackles for loss.

Henderson delivered 11 double-digit tackle games this season and has 26 in his career. He has 436 career tackles which is currently third in Sun Belt Conference history. His 12.1 tackles per game career average is third most in FBS history behind only Kuechly and E.J. Henderson (2000-02) of Maryland.

🔼 In Good Company. While the Lady Monarchs are taking exams this week, we can safely say that on the court, they’ve passed every test given to them.

Now 6️⃣ weeks into the 2023-24 season, ODU is one of just 18 programs that remain undefeated in Division I women’s basketball and just one of 4️⃣ outside of the Power 5 that sit with an unblemished record.

Their success has stemmed from an unrelenting defensive effort as they lead the country in scoring defense (46.1 ppg) and opponent three-point defense (18.6-percent), as well as fourth in overall opponent field-goal percentage (32.1-percent).

Veteran guard Kaye Clark ranks in the top-10 nationally averaging 3.4 steals per contest.

Next up for the Monarchs, a Sunday trip to arch-rival VCU. Game time in Richmond is set for 1 p.m.

🎳 BOWL WEEK! QUEEN CITY BOUND!

The Monarchs are heading to the Queen City as ODU will go bowling for the second time in three seasons.

This time, it’ll in the Famous Toastery Bowl be against a familiar foe as they battle the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, a program that the Monarchs have played seven times previously as a former Conference USA opponent.

The two teams will take the field at Jerry Richardson Stadium on the campus of UNC Charlotte on next Monday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m on ESPN.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Monday’s Famous Toastery Bowl in Charlotte will be the eighth all-time meeting between ODU and WKU.

ODU’s 37-34 win at WKU in 2018 will go down as one of the wildest finishes in program history.

Which former Monarch caught the game-tying touchdown with under 10 seconds to play?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: Travis Fulgham.

Fulgham hauled in a six-yard TD pass with nine seconds left to tie the game at 34-34 back on Oct. 20, 2018.

With two seconds left, WKU ran a pass play that fell incomplete, but ODU was called for roughing the passer that set up a 57-yard field goal attempt by the Hilltoppers. The kick fell short but the Monarchs were called for too many players on the field, setting up a 52-yard field goal for WKU.

That kick fell short and was caught at the goal line by Isaiah Harper and returned to the WKU 17, where a facemask penalty was called, adding one more untimed down, in which Nick Rice drilled a 26-yarder to cap off the wild finish.

🦁 Let’s have a great day, y’all!
