Monarchs Rank Among Nation's Best In Community Service

Good Morning Monarchs. Today, on this Juneteenth holiday, we pause to remember, honor and celebrate freedom for all.

Please enjoy today’s Brew on this special day.

🙌 Making An Impact
⏱ Kickoff: 73 Days Away
⭐ And much, much more!

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 73 DAYS

The year? 2021.
The number? 73.

That was the total numbers of receptions hauled in by current NY Jet
and former ODU Monarch Zach Kuntz as he set a new single-season
record for receptions by an ODU tight end.

He is one of only three Monarchs all time to tally 70+ catches in a
single-season joining Nick Mayers (79 in 2012) and
Jonathan Duhart (74 in 2018).

🔼 Making An Impact. We all enjoy the wins. We all enjoy the championships. But seeing our Monarchs make an impact off the field is what it’s really all about.

The hundreds of ODU student-athletes did that and then some this past year with the Monarchs finishing ninth in the country in community service efforts, recently announced by the organization, Helper Helper.

A tracking service for community work hours, Helper Helper worked in conjunction with the NCAA to run a community service challenge for all Division I institutions. Schools were evaluated on time donated and participation levels.

ODU finished ninth in community engagement hours served with a total of 7,645 and a participation level of 99% for the 2023-24 academic year.

“ODU's goal is to help student-athletes cultivate a heart for service and create a habit of giving back to local communities. ODU Athletics strives not only to teach student-athletes to serve our Hampton Roads area, but to become lifelong volunteers in every aspect of their life,” said Director of Student-Athlete Services and Community Engagement Amy Lynch.

⏮ ICYMI

We like our Brew hot n’ fresh. But we’re not opposed to you reheating your cup. Here’s some news you may have missed recently…

🔼 Straight Flexin’. There may not be a more motivated individual in all of college football than Jason Henderson.

The all-time ODU great had his season cut short due to injury last season and with 75 days until kickoff, Henderson is already piling up the accolades.

Late last week, Henderson earned First-Team All-American accolades from Phil Steele. Last season, he led the country with 14.2 tackles per game and became the first ODU player to earn first-team All-America honors.

🔼 Need Some Company? Henderson wasn’t the only Monarch earning preseason accolades as six total ODU players earned recognition from Phil Steele and Athlon Sports last week.

In addition to Henderson earning First Team All-American honors, defensive tackle Denzel Lowry earned first-team SBC honors by Athlon and second-team from Phil Steele. Tight end Jalen Butler was named to the fourth team by Phil Steele, while offensive lineman Santana Saunders earned fourth-team honors.

Isiah Paige earned fourth-team honors as a punt returner by Phil Steele and third-team by Athlon, and fourth team wide receiver by Athlon. Incoming transfer Patrick Smith-Young received fourth-team honors from Athlon at defensive back.

Justin Verlander is the only former Monarch to earn the honor of playing in the annual event.

In his 18+ seasons, how many times has Verlander been named an MLB All-Star?
