🔼 Clipping Their Wings. You know how sometimes the bye week in football can provide a moment of clarity for a team?
That may have been what exam week in mid-December did for the ODU men’s hoops squad, who picked up their third win in the past four games on Saturday, grinding out a thrilling 74-71 conference victory over Southern Miss to improve to 2-1 in league play.
Jaden Johnson made a driving layup with 36 seconds remaining in the second half to put the Monarchs up 71-68 before three clutch free throws by Sean Durugordon sealed the victory for ODU.
Robert Davis Jr. led the way with 18 points on the night and matched his career high in assists (4). Durugordon finished with 16 points, a team leading nine rebounds, along with a career high four steals. Johnson played all but 30 seconds in the win and had a career high nine assists, while Caelum Swanton-Rodger matched his career high 12 points tonight and grabbed eight boards.
🔼 Rollin’ Along. Sure the near double-double was nice, but the clutch free-throws down the stretch were the dagger as En’Dya Buford led three Lady Monarchs in double-figures, sealing ODU’s fifth straight victory on Saturday.
Buford scored 18 points, including five from the charity stripe in the game’s final minutes, to help the Lady Monarchs hold off a late charge by ULM, defeating the Warhawks, 72-68, to stay unbeaten in league play.
Joining Buford in double-figures was Brenda Fontana (13 pts and six rebounds), Kelsey Thompson (13 pts and six assists) and Mariah Clyaton (10 pts and five rebounds).
🔼 Eyes On The Prize. And now the real fun begins.
The NFL regular season wrapped up this weekend and three former Monarchs are headed to the postseason with their eyes focused on the ultimate prize of the Lombardi Trophy in February.
Rick Lovato with the Eagles, and Taylor Heinicke and Stone Smartt with the Chargers, all secured spots in the playoffs with their squads and will begin their quest this upcoming weekend.
Lovato and Philadelphia will host the Packers at 4:30 on Sunday, while the Chargers head to Houston on Saturday for a 4:30 showdown.
