🔼 A-Town Down. That’s how you wrap up a road trip.
The ODU football team picked up its first conference win of the 2024 season, flexing their defensive muscles in a 21-14 victory at Georgia State on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.
In the final six minutes of the contest, the Monarch defense forced an interception and a fumble to help seal the road win.
Offensively, redshirt freshman Colton Joseph settled into a groove in the second half, finishing with 141 passing yards and 95 rushing yards for ODU. Tariq Sims and Devin Roche combined for 93 yards on the ground and each found the end zone for the Monarchs.
🔼 Working Overtime. Nothing like working a little overtime on the weekend.
The ODU field hockey did exactly that, earning a thrilling 3-2 victory over rival JMU on Sunday in the annual Townebank Royal Rivalry matchup.
Just over six minutes into the OT period, Sanci Molkenboer took a feed from Rina Tsioles and fired the game winner into the back of the cage.
🔼 Splitting It Up. With five weeks left in their regular season, the ODU volleyball squad is already setting a standard.
After dropping a tough match to open the weekend series with App State, the Monarchs bounced back to sweep the Mountaineers on Saturday and tied the program record for wins with 14.
Sophomore Bryanna Jones had one of her best performances of the year in Saturday’s victory, racking up 14 kills and six digs.
🔼 Pink Power. Donning their pink to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the ODU women’s swim team used its pink power to come away with a victory at home on Saturday over Campbell.
The Lady Monarchs picked up their first victory of the season with a 150.5-111.5 defeat of the visiting Camels.
⚾️ A LEGEND REMEMBERED
Once you met Tony Guzzo, you never forgot him.
His impact on and off the baseball diamond will be field for generations. The former ODU head baseball coach, who touched the lives of thousands of young men passed away early Thursday, he was 75.
Guzzo was the head coach at ODU from 1995 through 2004 and he took three teams to the NCAA Tournament. He was 303-252 at ODU before stepping down as head coach.
He also coached three-time Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, and Matt Quatraro, now manager of the Kansas City Royals. And he grew close to Ben Verlander, Justin’s brother and now a Major League Baseball analyst for Fox Sports.
