🔼 Thursday Night Lights. After a thrilling, gutty road win at App State last weekend, ODU football returns to the national spotlight tomorrow night, as the Monarchs welcome Georgia Southern to S.B. Ballard Stadium for a pivotal Sun Belt Conference showdown.
Thursday's game will also feature a special ceremony honoring Monarch legend Taylor Heinicke, whose jersey will be retired at the end of the first quarter, and an unforgettable drone show at halftime.
Offensively, the Monarchs will look to establish the ground game after rushing for 207 yards on a school-record 61 attempts against App State. Running back Devin Roche led the way with 101 yards, while quarterback Quinn Henicle added 88 yards on the ground.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.
🔼 The Sack Man. Behind a career day in ODU’s stifling 10-3 win at App State, Monarch defensive end Javen Gibson was named the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Gibson had a career day in ODU’s 10-3 win at App State, securing four tackles for loss and two sacks. He was part of a defense that held the Mountaineers to 158 yards of total offense, the second fewest allowed by ODU in program history.
The three points ODU allowed were the fewest scored by App State since they were shut out by LSU in 2005, 24-0.
🔼 The Countdown Is On. 19 days.
That’s all that separates us from the return of ODU women’s basketball, who is set to return to the court on November 2 in the first chapter of the SBC-MAC Challenge at Central Michigan.
With plenty of new faces joining the Monarch roster, head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones and her staff are hard at work building chemistry and preparing for another run in a competitive Sun Belt schedule.
🔼 Lighting It Up. Three goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest set the tone on Monday afternoon as the ODU field hockey team rolled to a 9-0 victory over Queens.
Winners of five of its past six, ODU got scoring from eight different players, led by Serena Langendoen, who continued her outstanding season with two more goals and an assist.
Sofia Marciano and Cosima Perleth also added a goal and two assists in the victory.
🔼 Dynamic Duo. Two wins. Two awards.
This week, ODU Field Hockey standouts Lotte Haagmans and Serena Langendoen earned BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Haagmans powered Old Dominion’s offense this weekend against Villanova and Queens (NC), finishing with three goals, one assist and seven points, while Langendoen finished with the same stat line and anchored a defense that limited Queens to just three shots on the day in Monday’s victory.
🔼 Back-To-Back. For the second straight week an Old Dominion University Swimmer was named the ASUN Swimmer of the Week.
This week, it was first year standout Jonathan Payne who earned the accolade.
Payne secured a pair of distance victories for the Monarchs, winning both the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events against Gardner-Webb. Payne dominated the 500 free with a time of 4:34.04 to win by eight seconds. He added a victory in the 1,000 free, touching the wall at 9:20.17 to finish 26 seconds ahead of the runner-up.
