🔼 The Menacing Monarch. When your defense puts on a performance like ODU put forth last Thursday on national TV, you’re going to garner some recognition.

On Monday, the leader of that unit, defensive end Kris Trinidad was named Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Trinidad registered five tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles in ODU’s dominant performance against the Trojans. ODU held Troy to a program record low 138 total yards and delivered a program record nine sacks. The shutout was the second in ODU history and the first since a 6-0 victory over Charlotte in 2017.

Trinidad forced a fumble on Troy’s first offensive play of the game that Mario Easterly recovered, and the offense turned quickly into seven points. Trinidad’s two sacks were a career single-game high that vaulted him into third in ODU history with 14.5 sacks.

🔼 The Show Stopper. With 68 saves in his final season at ODU, veteran keeper Michael Statham finished his Monarch career as the program’s all-time saves leader with 273.

Statham played nearly 6,000 minutes in net during his time in Norfolk, tallying 60+ saves in each of his four seasons.

🔼 What A Run. Over 23,000 players have put on NFL shoulder pads and strapped them up on Sundays. Only 10-percent of those players reached over 145 games played.

Former Monarch Rick Lovato is in that exclusive club as the 11-year veteran retired earlier this month after a stint with the Los Angeles Chargers.

He concludes his career with 148 games played, a Pro Bowl honor and two Super Bowl rings during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Congrats on a great career, Rick!

🦁 A LASTING LEGACY

Dr. James Jarrett, Old Dominion’s director of athletics for 40 years, who turned ODU into a women’s basketball and field hockey national powerhouse, guided the University’s rise in men’s basketball and led the athletics program into Division I, passed away peacefully at his Norfolk home this past Thursday night surrounded by family.

Jarrett, 88, a native of Decatur, Illinois, came to ODU in 1967 as an associate professor in Health and Physical Education and quickly became a force for change at the university. A graduate of Southern Illinois and Florida State, where he received his PhD., he was named ODU’s director of athletics in 1970, replacing long-time AD Bud Metheny.

Under Jarrett’s leadership, ODU became the first college or university in Virginia to offer athletics scholarships to women in 1974 and as a result, the University became a national women’s sports powerhouse.

ODU won women’s basketball national championships in 1979, 1980 and 1985.

🦁 MONARCH TRIVIA

As we mentioned, Kris Trinidad’s two sacks against Troy last week were a single-game career-high for him and also moved him into third-place all-time in ODU history 14.5 career sacks.
