Monarch Brew 2/17: Extreme Makeover: Ballpark Edition

Renovations Well Underway At New ODU Baseball Complex

Good Morning Monarchs. Back in the early 2000s, a phenomenon took over TVs every Sunday night.

A family would be sent away for a week while their house was completely made over and the big reveal would come at the end of each episode.

While they won’t be completely sent away, the ODU baseball program is getting a makeover of their own in Norfolk.

What all do we have stirring in today’s Brew? Check it out below!

⚾️ MAKEOVER UNDERWAY

The makeover is underway!

While the ODU baseball kicked off down in Atlanta over the weekend, their home digs is officially under construction as the new Bud Metheny Ballpark at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex will be a state-of-the-art facility that is scheduled to open next spring.

The renovation will add 2,032 individual chairback seats, a club akin to the Priority Automotive Club, a specious press box, a large and modern locker room and upgraded concessions and restroom facilities.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Hawk Hunting. While love may not usually be a good thing on the tennis courts, the ODU women’s tennis team shared plenty of it on Valentine’s Day.

The Lady Monarchs won for the second time in the past three outings, grinding out a tough 4-3 victory over visiting Kansas on Friday afternoon.

Playing at the No. 5 singles position, Victoria Matasova delivered the match sealing point, winning a three-set thriller as ODU won four of the six singles matches on the day.

🔼 Balancing Act. Through the first four games of the 2025 season, one thing is for sure for the ODU lacrosse squad… they’ve got balance.

On Sunday, the Lady Monarchs already matched their win total from last spring, dominating Gardner-Webb, 16-3, to move to 3-1 through the first two weeks of the year.

10 different Monarchs scored goals with five having multi-goal afternoons, while Lydia Laney came away with four assists. Brynn Bowen protected the net with 10 total saves.

ODU’s offensive output has skyrocketed from last year, averaging 13 goals per game, up from 8 a season ago.

🎙️ ON THE MIC

The ODU Basketball: Keeping Up With The Joneses Coaches Show is BACK tomorrow week for another episode on Monday at Recovery Sports Grill in Norfolk from 6-7 pm.

Hosted by Matthew Hatfield, the Voice of the Lady Monarchs, he will joined by both Head Coaches, Mike Jones and DeLisha Milton-Jones, who will talk about both team’s games this weekend and the outlook heading towards the upcoming Sun Belt Conference tournaments next month.

🙌 HELPING HANDS

Sure, watching dunks, 3-pointers and thrilling action on the court is fun,
but doing that AND helping out a local child, how can you beat that?

Next week, the ODU faithful have that opportunity as anyone who buys a ticket to Thursday’s home game (Feb. 20) against Marshall, will have money donated towards the Chartway Promise, which is helping send

Buy a ticket for home game against Marshall on Feb. 20 and ODU will donate $1 for Isaiah, who has Sickle Cell Disease.
