🔼 Two-For-One Special. Before the winter weather took over the region this past weekend, the ODU men’s tennis team heated things up on the indoor courts, sweeping a pair of matches against in-state foes Richmond and Norfolk State.

On Friday, the Monarchs started things off by rolling past the Spiders, 6-1, before battling to a hard-fought 4-3 win over nearby rival, Norfolk State that evening to close out the weekend sweep.

ODU has now won three in a row and sits at 4-2 in the early portion of the 2026 slate. The Monarchs are now set to welcome another in-state foe, Virginia Tech, to town this Friday at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

🔼 Helping Hands. For four years, Clarisse Machanguana thrilled ODU fans on the court. She was a foundational piece of the Monarchs’ dominant years as went on to play several seasons in the NBA and on the international stage.

After her time on the court came to a close, she established the Clarisse Machanguana Foundation, which has helped tens of thousands of young people, especially young girls, escape poverty.

But now, it is Machanguana who needs help.

Her home was engulfed in the record flooding that left 700,000 people homeless and more than 100 dead over the last week in Mozambique.

Machanguana’s home, just south of capital city of Maputo, was almost a total loss. There was standing water in the house for five days. Two days after the flooding began to recede, she had to hire a fisherman to take her to her house in his boat.

🔼 Back For More. For years, former ODU baseball standout Jared Young scratched and clawed for any opportunity he could on the diamond.

His perseverance has paid off as Young has earned stints with the Cubs and the Mets in three of the past four seasons.

Last year, he set a career high, playing in 22 games with New York, including a career-best four HRs in 43 at-bats. With six more games played at the MLB level, he would become just the fifth position player in ODU history to appear in 50+ games.

In two weeks, Young will once again battle for his spot as he heads to Port St. Luice as part of the Mets Spring Training, which is set to open on February 16.

Next week, Luke Waters begins his final season with the ODU Baseball program. He enters the 2026 season with the chance to move into the top-10 in several offensive categories, including hits (190), doubles (27) and total bases (299).

Which former Monarch standout is the program leader in all three of those categories?
