🔼 It’s Showtime. Here we go, it’s showtime for the ODU tennis squads as they hit the courts in North Carolina for NCAA Tournament action this afternoon.
Up first, the 60th-ranked women’s squad squares off with Tennessee in the first round in Durham. First serve is set for 1 pm this afternoon with the winner set to battle either Duke or VCU tomorrow.
Just an hour later, the 53rd-ranked men’s squad hits the court to take on Gardner-Webb in Winston-Salem. The Monarchs and Runnin' Bulldogs will get started at 2 p.m., and with a win, ODU would square off with either top-seeded Wake Forest or Navy.
🔼 Earning An Invite. For the third time in the past six years, an ODU women’s golfer will be competing in a NCAA Regional.
This week, sophomore standout Barbara Car earned an individual berth into the Louisville Regional, which will be held at the University of Louisville Golf Club fro May 11-13.
🔼 Joining The Rafters. ODU women’s basketball head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones is set to join some elite company as it was announced that she will have her #8 jersey retired by the Los Angeles Sparks this summer.
Milton-Jones, who won two WNBA Championships in 11 seasons with Los Angeles, will be honored at a special halftime ceremony on Tuesday, July 28.
The Monarchs leader was drafted to the WNBA in 1999 by Los Angeles as the fourth overall pick. She played a total of 344 games with LAS and averaged 11.7 points and 5.5 rebounds during her time in the City of Angels.
🔼 Accolades Aplenty. Even before taking the courts at NCAA Regionals, the ODU women’s tennis squad is bringing home a slew of accolades.
Five different Monarchs were honored by the Sun Belt this week, led by Victoria Matasova, the Sun Belt Elite Award winner, and head coach Dominic Manilla, who was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year for the fourth consecutive season.
In addition, Kira Matushkina and Ulyana Romanova earned spots on the Singles First and Second Team, while the duo, along with Matasova and Lidiia Rasskouskaia all were named to the Doubles First Team.
