🔼 The Hall Call. Five ODU legends will take their official their place among Monarch royalty.
This week, the ODU Athletic Department announced its 2026 ODU Sports Hall of Fame Class.
This year’s class includes Maggie Simmermacher (Women’s Golf), Tim Hopkinson (Men’s Soccer), Sarah Breen (Field Hockey), Taylor Heinicke (Football), and Daniel Hudson (Baseball).
🔼 A New Era. ODU Lacrosse has a new leader.
On Monday, Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig announced the hiring of Lauren Gunning as ODU’s women’s lacrosse head coach.
Gunning comes to ODU from USC, where she was the associate head coach for the previous five seasons. She helped lead the Trojans to a pair of NCAA Tournaments and a Pac-12 Championship in 2023.
Prior to USC, Gunning spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at UConn. She returned to her alma mater in the summer of 2014 and coached her first six seasons as a Huskies assistant. She was elevated to the position of associate head coach in 2021.
🔼 Young Gun. Now that’s how you make a first impression.
ODU Baseball standout Ben Tanton earned Freshman All-American accolades this week, being named to the Second Team by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
A right-handed pitcher from Vestal, New York, Tanton earned All-Sun Belt Freshman Team honors and led the Monarchs with a 7-0 record. His other season totals included one save, two shutouts, and a 2.19 ERA through one start and 17 appearances.
🏈 COUNTIN’ DOWN: 87 DAYS TIL KICKOFF
Throughout the summer, we will be counting down the days
to the return of ODU Football this fall. The Monarchs will host
Norfolk State on September 5 at 6 p.m.
Led by now ODU Sports Hall of Famer Taylor Heinicke, the ODU offense lit up the scoreboard in 2012 to the tune of 587 points, the single-season program record for most points scored in a season by the Monarchs.
That season, ODU scored 44 TDs through the air and 34 TDs on the ground, both are also single-season records for the program.
