Good Morning ODU Fam. Summer may be winding down, but the MLB playoff races are just heating up and plenty of former Monarchs are right in the middle of the action!

Clear the calendars - you’ve got plans this Saturday!

ODU is set to host a special Fan Fest this Saturday, Aug. 3 at Dick’s House of Sport in Chesapeake from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Located on Greenbriar Square in Chesapeake, Dick’s House of Sport will have the new 2024 ODU athletics gear in stock, including new UnderArmour products and much more. The event will include great prizes and giveaways.

ODU’s Director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander will host a special edition of the ODU Football Coach’s Show with head coach Ricky Rahne from 2-3 p.m. Monarch Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Jones and Women’s Basketball Head Coach DeLisha Milton-Jones will also be in attendance. Fun will be had for the entire family, as Big Blue will host a scavenger hunt and there will be interactive games for children of all ages.

Several ODU partners will be on site, including Lolly’s ice cream, which will have ODU’s official ice cream, ice cream and cake on sell while The Dirty Buffalo will be selling ODU’s official BBQ sauce, Big Blue Q and spice rub, Big Blue Belly Rub.

⚾️ IT’S HEATING UP

As the calendar winds towards August, the MLB playoff race is heating up and plenty of former Monarchs are right in the middle of it all.

All five former ODU stars that are currently in the big leagues find themselves on teams that would qualify for the playoffs if the season ended today.

Vinnie Pasquantino is having a career year for the upstart Royals, hitting 11 HRs and driving in 67 RBI, the most in a single-season by any former Monarch.

Daniel Hudson and Ryan Yarbrough are both a part of a Dodgers team that is competing for the best record in all of baseball. The duo have combined for 76 appearances, 110.1 innings pitched and a 3.02 ERA.

In his second big league season, Jared Koenig has pitched in 32 games for the NL Central leading Milwaukee Brewers. The southpaw is 8-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 41.0 innings pitched for the Brew Crew.

Longtime MLB All-Star Justin Verlander has battled injuries throughout the 2024 season, appearing in just 10 games, but is on the road back and could be back for a late season push for the Houston Astros.

⛵️ ONE LAST RIDE

The journey continues for ODU’s own Stephanie Roble as the women’s skiff competition wraps up its fourth and final day of races heading into the medal finale.

Through the first nine races, Roble and her sailing partner, Maggie Shea, have an average finish of 10th, including a best finish of third in the fourth race of the series.

At the end of the Opening Series, the top ten boats in the fleet will qualify for the Medal Race, which is worth double points. Currently, Roble and Shea sit in the 10th and final qualifying spot entering today’s final three opening series races.

Only one ODU QB, not named Taylor Heinicke,
has tossed for 30+ touchdowns in a single-season.

That man was David Washington, who threw for 31 TDs
in 2016 for the Monarchs.

In the ever-changing world of college athletics, ODU standouts Jason Henderson and Santana Saunders are a bit of a throwback.

Both have had star-studded careers with the Monarchs. Both could have jumped in the transfer portal like thousands of others around the country.

But both remained loyal and true and are ready to lead the Monarchs yet again this fall.
