Monarch Brew 11/13: No Bull, They're For Real

Monarchs Drop Buffalo to Improve to 2-0

Good Morning Monarchs. There’s an old adage in sports, Defense Wins Championships.

If the adage holds true, the 2023-24 ODU women’s basketball team is in great shape as the Monarchs pulled no punches and used a stout defensive effort to move to a perfect 2-0 ahead of Tuesday night’s big showdown in Norfolk.

A take home statue of an ODU legend?
A Big East foe?
What more could you want?

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏆 A Fall To Remember
👑 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 No Bull, They’re For Real. Two down, many more to come.

A strong defensive effort helped the ODU women’s basketball lock down a hard-fought 59-48 victory over Buffalo in the opening round of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge on Saturday night at Chartway Arena.

With the victory, the Monarchs improved to 2-0 on the season ahead of hosting Xavier in a big time showdown in Norfolk on Tuesday night.

Veteran Kaye Clark and newcomer Mimi McCollister both finished 11 points to lead ODU in the victorious effort. Brenda Fontana turned in a 10-point effort with seven rebounds, while another newcomer Simone Cunningham added eight points and nine rebounds.

The Monarchs forced 18 turnovers and held the Bulls to just 31.9-percent from the field in the defensive battle.

🔼 New Heights. Nothing like reaching new heights when you’re not even done yet, right?

That’s what the ODU volleyball program accomplished this past weekend, splitting a series at Southern Miss (3-1 and 1-3) to set a new program record with their 14th win of the season, a new high for the four-year-old program.

Highlighting the weekend was junior Myah Conway, who became the first Monarch ever to reach 1,000 career kills.

Doing so in big time fashion, Conway unleashed her sixth 20+ kill performance of the season (21) to help ODU set the program wins record in Friday night’s victory in Hattiesburg.

Next up, ODU earned the fifth seed of the East Division and will take on fourth-seeded Louisiana in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. First serve is set at 2:30 pm in Foley, Ala. on Thursday.

🔼 Tough Roads. There’s a reason there’s a thing called “home field advantage.”

Both the ODU men’s hoops and football teams traveled those tough roads this weekend, with both squads coming up short in road tests.

In the opening round of the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge, the Monarchs got a 20-point effort from Chaunce Jenkins, but it wasn’t enough as they fell just short, 73-68 at Ball State on Saturday.

Facing yet another top-25 team, Liberty used a quick start to pull away from the football team, 35-10 on Saturday evening in Lynchburg.

🏆 A FALL TO REMEMBER

While the journeys have come to a close, the ODU field hockey and women’s soccer team achieved history.

In the 93 year existence of the athletic department, NEVER had two championships been won on the same day.

UNTIL 2023!

The foundation has been set. The history has been made.

The 2023 ODU women’s soccer team will go down as one of the best in program history and showed that to the country, taking third-seeded Georgetown to overtime, but the Hoyas pulled out the OT win to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

The Monarchs finished 13-3-5 on the year.

Junior Emily Bredek, who ranked among the nation’s best keepers all season long, made seven saves in the contest.

The toughest part about sports is that you can prepare, be ready and play your hearts out, but sometimes the bounces just don’t go your way.

For the 17th-ranked Monarchs, that’s how their magical fall season came to a close as ODU played right with 4th-ranked Maryland, but the Terps were able to find the back of the cage and the Monarchs were just off target a few times as Maryland came away with the 3-0 first round win.

ODU outshot (10-7) and outcornered (5-3) the Terps, but an early goal from the home team and a goal in the second and third quarters proved to be enough.

It was the first trip back to the NCAA Tournament for the Monarchs in 10 years and it was the first-ever BIG East Tournament Championship.

🏀 TUESDAY NIGHT HOOPS

The ODU faithful don’t want to miss this one!

Our own legend in take home form! Come watch a great hoops game and come early to get your Nancy Lieberman statues!

🦁 THE PRIDE OF ODU

One thing is for sure the Blue & Grey blood runs deep.

That’s been shown in so many ways over the years and yet again, that bond is being put on display.

A group of ODU alumni and friends have formed a collective called "The Pride of ODU" in order to help ODU navigate the changing landscape of college athletics.

The collective will raise money and help to facilitate deals that will compensate ODU student-athletes for their Name, Image and Likeness (NIL), such as personal appearances, social media promotions or launching an entrepreneurial effort.

The collective already has negotiated NIL deals with more than 30 ODU student-athletes.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

The strong start to the season is nothing new for the Monarchs and head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones.

This season marks the second time in the past two seasons (2021-22 and 2023-24) that ODU has started 2-0 and a second time in the past two years that ODU has held its first two opponents to under 100 points combined.
