💪 THE SUMMERTIME GRIND

Sure, temperatures may be going crazy.
Sure, the beach would be easier.

But our Monarchs are grinding this summer preparing for a big 2024 season in Norfolk!

Camp is less than a month away!

🗓 SAVE THE DATE(S)

You know the side mirrors on your car that read “objects may be closer than they appear.”

That would be the 2024-25 ODU Athletic Calendar as the Monarchs are just 36 days away from the official start of a new year.

That year will start with the reigning Sun Belt Champion women’s soccer team hitting the pitch on Thursday, August 15 against in-state rival VCU in Norfolk.

The full Lady Monarch schedule was released last week and is loaded with 10 home dates.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 52 DAYS

Number of the Day: 5(.)4

Ok, we bent the rules a little but the ODU offense returns a stable of offensive threats this fall, including QB Grant Wilson who looks to lead a unit that averaged 5.4 yards per play this past fall.

Wilson and the offense averaged nearly 24 points a game in 2023 and the Monarchs will look to raise that even higher this upcoming season.

🇺🇸 A REAL (ALL) AMERICAN

And the accolades keep rolling in.

Jason Henderson’s legend continues to grow as he enters his final season at ODU as a Walter Camp First-Team Preseason All-American.

Henderson earned first-team All-America accolades from Walter Camp last season after leading the country with 14.2 tackles per game and finishing third in the nation with 19.5 tackles for loss. It was the second-straight season Henderson led the nation in tackles per game, as he has 356 tackles over the last two years, the most in the country.

🔼 Raising The Bar. The ODU Athletic Department has always been about building champions.

Those champions aren’t just in their sport, but also in the classroom and life.

This past year, the Monarchs continued to raise the bar as the 423 studetn-athletes set a record high in grade-point average for the spring semester (3.288) and a record high for a full year (3.27).

🔼 The Bryce Is Right. No no, it’s not showcase showdown time, but the Bryce is definitely right.

Mortimer earned an NCAA B-cut time in the 200 breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 1:55.58 at the ASUN Championships to qualify for the honor. He also finished 10th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.27.

To qualify for First-Team Scholar All-America, student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher and participated in their national championship. Second-Team selections, must have also earned a 3.5 GPA or higher and met a "B" time standard for the national championship or qualified for a diving zone qualification meet.

🏀 ALWAYS A LEGEND

Last week, we learned of the unfortunate passing of former ODU hooper Mario Mullen.

Mullen was a local legend and teammates of current ODU head coach Mike Jones on the 1995 CAA Championship team that upset Villanova in the NCAA Tournament.

He earned CAA All-Freshman honors and was named to the CAA All-Tournament team during that 1995 title run.
