Opportunity Knocks for Monarchs on National TV

TGIF Monarchs. As the well-known philosopher Eminem once stated, “One shot. One opportunity.”

That opportunity is less than 48 hours away for the ODU football team as the Monarchs has another national TV showdown, this time with in-state rival and nationally-ranked JMU.

We also got a sneak peek at this year’s fast paced men’s hoops squad, while the women’s soccer team wrapped things up and are focused on a run in the Sun Belt Tournament.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🏈 GAME WEEK

Let’s keep this thing rolling.

ODU, who has now won three of its past four games, will travel to Harrisonburg to take on the undefeated and 25th-ranked Dukes of JMU.

This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two schools that are separated by just over 200 miles.

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Off and Running. Welp, Forrest Gump would be happy with the pace of the 2023-24 ODU men’s hoops squad. They will definitely be RUNNING.

ODU ran from the opening tip to roll past Virginia State, 80-59, in the exhibition opener on Wednesday night at Chartway Arena.

Chaunce Jenkins led the Monarchs with 17 points and six rebounds in 30 minutes.

The game marked the first appearance at Chartway Arena for Vasean Allette, the highly-regarded, 6-3 freshman from Toronto, who finished with 11 points, three assists and two steals.

🔼 I See You Rook. If Martina Ciriesi had a trading card, it would be listed as “Rated Rookie.”

The freshman swimmer continued the strong start to her ODU career by being named Sun Belt Conference Swimmer of the Week.

The Castelnuovo Rangone, Italy native finished first in the women's 200 Breast with a time of 2:24.46 on Saturday against Towson. She also added a second place spot in the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.05.

🔼 Watt(s) a Finish. Veteran and team captain Megan Watts is making sure to make the most of every second she has left at ODU.

Watts provided the heroics a road matchup of two of the best defenses in the Sun Belt as she scored with 94 seconds left to help the Monarchs earn a draw against ULM, 1-1, in the regular season finale.

The goal was Watts’ fifth of the season and fourth in the past eight games.

ODU finishes the regular season at 10-2-5 and will be the second seed in next week’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament. They will await the winner of seventh-seeded Georgia State and 10th-seeded Southern Miss.

🔼 One Last Dance. For nearly three decades, Alan Dawson strolled the sidelines in Norfolk.

Friday night, he’ll do it for the last time at home when the Monarchs host sixth-ranked Marshall at 7 p.m. Fans encouraged to arrive early as Dawson will be honored pre-game for his dedication to ODU.
