Monarch Brew 11/29: Party Like Its 1999

Monarchs Match Best Start Since 1998-99

Good Morning Monarchs. Exactly none of the current members of the ODU women’s basketball program were born yet.

The average price of a gallon of gas was $1.02.
98 Degrees had a song in the Billboard Top-10.
Bill Clinton was in office.

That’s the last time the ODU women’s basketball team started 5-0 until NOW.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 Party Like Its (1998-)1999. One thing is for sure, if you’re coming to play against the ODU women’s basketball team, you’re going to have to earn every basketball.

The Monarchs once again put on a defensive clinic en route to the best start since the 1998-99 season when they rolled past Elon, 60-29, on Tuesday night at Chartway Arena.

The 29 points is the fewest allowed by ODU to a Division I opponent since Nov. 14, 2014 when the Monarchs toppled Presbyterian 41-26 in the season-opener.

ODU entered Tuesday night with the nation’s top scoring defense, allowing almost two points fewer a game than the next closest team. That number dropped to 41.6 points per game, nearly five points better than the second-best scoring defense (Texas - 46.4).

Offensively, Kaye Clark led the way with 15 points, in addition to four steals on the night.

🔼 Not On Nolan. With two of its key leaders sidelined by early injuries, the ODU defense was looking for veterans to step up.

Insert redshirt senior Nolan Johnson.

Johnson had a huge day in Saturday’s thrilling win over Georgia State, with his first career INT and a 40-yard return, to go along with five tackles and a huge pass break up.

His performance earned him a spot on the Pro Football Focus National Team Of The Week.

🔼 Class Act. Sure, the ODU women’s soccer team were champions on the pitch this fall.

But their success isn’t limited to soccer.

This week, the Monarchs had six players named to the Academic All-District team. Rhea Kijowski, Thalia Morisi, Gry Boe Thrysoe, Ece Turkoglu, Anna Torslov and Megan Watts were all recognized for their hard work in the classroom.

The 2023 Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.

Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in middle December. To qualify, a student-athlete had to have at least a 3.5 grade point average.

🎳 LET’S GO BOWLING

We can’t stop smiling and screaming since Saturday!

What.A.WIN!

Our Monarchs are going bowling for the second time in three seasons.

The destination? That will be determined and announced on the ESPN Bowl Presentation Show on Sunday, Dec. 3rd at 12 p.m.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

In Tuesday night’s win over Elon, the ODU women’s basketball team did what they’ve done all year. Apply stifling defensive pressure.

The 60-29 win marked the fifth straight game that the Monarchs held the opposition to 50 points or fewer.

When was the last time ODU an oppponent to 50 points or less in five straight games?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 2002-03.

Coming down the stretch of the 2002-03 season, the Monarchs relied on their defense, holding five straight CAA opponents, including the first round of the conference tournament against Hofstra, to 50 or fewer points.

That year, ODU went 21-11 overall and won the CAA Championship to earn yet another trip to the NCAA Tournament.
