Monarch Brew 10/2: Pitch Perfect

Monarchs Remain Unbeaten

Good Monday Morning Monarch Nation. No, Anna Kendrick isn’t coming to Norfolk (at least not that we know of).

We’re talking about our soccer teams!

What a weekend on the pitch for the Blue & Grey with two BIG time home victories.

We’ve got all the details on a busy weekend for the Monarchs and so much more!

What else do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 Pitch Perfect. Sure hope no one was late for Saturday’s men’s soccer match in Norfolk.

Before everyone was settled into their seats, ODU had already lit up the score three times. The Monarchs had three goals in the first 22 minutes of the meeting with Coastal Carolina to roll to a 3-1 victory and remain unbeaten in 2023.

Sophomore Michael Eberle had a goal and an assist to lead the offensive onslaught and help the Blue & Grey to a 4-0-5 overall mark this fall.

🔼 Super Seniors. It was only right.

On a day where they were celebrated for all they’ve done over the past four years in Norfolk, it was only right that two of the stalwarts for the Monarchs were the ones who lifted them to yet another victory.

Ece Turkoglu scored two goals for the Blue & Grey and classmate Megan Watts scored another one as ODU scored four second-half goals to pull away from Southern Miss in a 4-0 win to move to 8-1-2 on the year.

Junior Emily Bredek and the Monarch defense registered their eighth shutout of the season and remain in the top-five nationally in goals-against-average.

🔼 Working Overtime. The ODU field hockey squad wasn’t listening to Dolly Parton’s 9-5 this past weekend.

Seniors Rina Tsioles and Marlon de Bruijne connected in the 70th minute to earn a hard-fought 2-1 overtime win on the road against a feisty Providence team.

The victory is the third straight for the Blue & Grey, who now return home for two games in Norfolk next weekend.

🔼 TDs for KC. Well, hello Mr. Callaway.

Junior Kadarius Callaway had a breakout performance for ODU’s football team in a tough road test against an unbeaten Marshall squad, but it came up just short as the Thundering Herd came away with a 41-35 victory in a true back-and-forth battle.

Callaway had 236 yards on the day, the second most in school history, including three TDs of over 65+ yards.

💪 RIVALRY RENEWED

TowneBank is a longstanding supporter of college athletics, and we are excited to cheer along the healthy competition for the second year of the TowneBank Royal Rivalry Challenge between Old Dominion University and James Madison University.

We are fortunate to have a strong alumni base on both sides of the rivalry within the Towne family, and we look forward to seeing who will hoist the crown for the 2023-2024 academic year.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

So Fresh, So Clean. In Saturday’s win, the ODU women’s soccer team put on an offensive show in the second half.

Even more impressive is yet another stifling defensive effort leading the Monarchs to an eighth shutout of the year and a goals against average of just 0.27, which ranks in the top-five nationally.

What’s the single-season program record for shutouts in the season for the Monarchs?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 11 in 2008.

The 2008 ODU Women’s Soccer team piled up an impressive 14-4-2 campaign en route to the CAA Quarterfinals before suffering a heartbreaking loss to Hofstra in PKs.

During that year, the Monarchs registered a program record 11 clean sheets.

🦁 Enjoy your Monday, y’all!
