🔼 Ram It Home. When you have 16 underclassmen on a roster of 24 and only two weeks to prepare for a season, it can be a bit unnerving.

But that’s the exact opposite of how the reigning conference champs looked on Thursday night as the ODU women’s soccer squad opened the 2024-25 athletic calendar with a bang and a thrilling 2-1 victory over longtime rival, VCU.

The Monarchs got goals from Rhea Kijowski and Yuliia Khrystiuk to lead the way, while all-conference goalie Emily Bredek tallied five saves and defended nine VCU corners on the night.

🔼 And it keeps going and going... At this point, we’re beginning to think the list of honors for Jason Henderson is a little like the energizer bunny from back in the day.

After collecting a spot on the 2024 Bednarik Award Watch List earlier this week, Henderson was named to the Butkus Award Watch List as well as named a Preseason All-American First Team honoree by The Sporting News.

Henderson is second among active college football players in career tackles and is 142 tackles away from the FBS record.

🔼 Academic Aces. With their 2024 season just a few weeks away, the reigning champion ODU field hockey team received one last accolade from last year.

To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.

🔼 Shootin’ Scholars. While they were trying to knock down a few aces on the course, the ODU men’s golf team definitely had plenty of aces in the classroom this past year.

Recently, the Monarchs were honored for their academic prowess by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Jakob Chicoyne, Kazuki Yamauchi, Jacob Gunther and Kaijun Ma all earned the distinction of 2023-24 Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars. In addition, the Monarchs also earned the GCAA’s 2023-24 Outstanding Team Academic Award.

For the Outstanding Team Academic Award, a team must have earned at least a 3.0 GPA based on a 4.0 scale.

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 15 DAYS

Number of the Day: 15

The year: 2015
The number: 1549

That was the number of all-purpose yards put up by ODU legend Zach Pascall, setting a single-season program record that still stands to this day.

That season, Pascall earned Second-Team All-Conference USA accolades, leading the team with 68 receptions and 970 receiving yards. He also added 165 rushing yards and 414 kickoff return yards that season.

⚽️ A LASTING IMPACT

Sure, chasing a third-straight Sun Belt title is important, but really creates an impact is the work the Lady Monarchs are doing in the community.
