Monarch Brew 12/11: Forever A Legend

Remembering ODU Legend Paul Webb

Good Morning Monarchs. “Heroes are remembered, but legends never die.”

While the quote comes from a famous baseball movie (The Sandlot, come on people!), it’s a perfect reference to one of the all-time greats in ODU and overall basketball history.

We’ve got more on his story and remembering what Paul Webb meant to our beloved Monarchs.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 Forever A Legend. Without Paul Webb, basketball in the Tidewater area may not be the same.

Webb was a true trailblazer and many described him as one of the finest gentlemen the game of basketball has ever seen.

On Friday, the legend passed away at the age of 94, surrounded by his loving family.

Webb is the first Division I head coach in ODU men’s basketball history after taking the Monarchs to the Division II Final Four in 1975-76 and then helped through the transition to Division I, leading ODU to upsets of Mississippi State, Georgetown and Virginia in the first season at the level.

🔼 And Another One. We told you last week. Jason Henderson was just getting started.

After collecting three All-American honors and the The Touchdown Club of Richmond’s Linebacker of the Year Award last week, Henderson made history yet again, becoming the first ODU to earn FBS first-team All-America accolades by a group that is recognized by the NCAA.

The Dingmans Ferry, Pa. native was named to the Walter Camp All-America first team Friday night during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.

Henderson leads the country with 170 tackles and 14.2 tackles per game and is third in the country with 19.5 tackles for loss. He is trying to become the first FBS player to lead the country in tackles in consecutive years since Luke Kuechly of Boston College did it in 2010-11.

🔼 Record Setter. The beautiful Chartway Arena building has been around for 21 years.

Many of the members of the ODU basketball programs weren’t even born when the arena opened its doors for the first time.

On Saturday, the Monarch faithful achieved something that had never been done as a brand new facility attendance record was set with 8,504 filling the building for the showdown with nationally-ranked James Madison.

Great job ODU fam!

🎳 QUEEN CITY, HERE WE COME!

The Monarchs are heading to the Queen City as ODU will go bowling for the second time in three seasons.

This time, it’ll in the Famous Toastery Bowl be against a familiar foe as they battle the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, a program that the Monarchs have played seven times previously as a former Conference USA opponent.

The two teams will take the field at Jerry Richardson Stadium on the campus of UNC Charlotte on Monday, Dec. 18 at 2:30 p.m.
