Wearing #43 this fall for the Monarchs is an in-state product
with redshirt junior Kris Trinidad fighting on the ODU defensive line.
Over the past two seasons, the Richmond, Va. product has earned 11 starts at defensive end, racking up 57 tackles, seven TFLs and 5.5 sacks.
⚾️ BRAVE NEW WORLD
For the second time this week, a former Monarch reached his dream as Jacob Gomez signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Atlanta Braves.
He joins John Holobetz, who was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the MLB Draft on Monday.
A southpaw from Rutherford, New Jersey, Gomez finished his senior campaign ranked third in the Sun Belt Conference with seven saves. He was also named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s (NCBWA) Stopper of the Year Award Midseason Watch List. His 2024 season totals included a 2-2 record, 2.88 ERA and a team-high 64 strikeouts through 56.1 innings of work.
During his four seasons as a Monarch, Gomez posted a 14-7 record with nine saves in five starts, 74 appearances and 180 innings. He owned a career ERA of 4.30 and finishes his time in Norfolk with 197 strikeouts.
🏐 ACES APLENTY
Last year’s ODU volleyball squad served up plenty of aces
on the court AND in the classroom.
This week, the Monarchs earned the AVCA Team Academic Award,
sponsored by INTENT for the fifth-straight season. The squad earned a 3.63 GPA for the 2023-24 academic year.
A record number of volleyball programs have earned the AVCA Team
Academic Award with more than 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball programs maintaining a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale
(or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale), to earn the award for their classroom excellence
during the recently completed academic year.
