Monarch Brew 8/25: So Fresh, So Clean

Bredek, Monarchs Post Third Straight Shutout

TGIF Monarchs. “Ain't nobody dope as me, I'm just so fresh, so clean
So fresh and so clean, clean”

Not sure if Emily Bredek is saying that in goal for the Monarchs this fall, but she should be after yet another stellar performance on Thursday night.

Wins are so much sweeter when they come against in-state rivals, right? I mean nothing beats bragging rights.

We’ve got all the details on Thursday night’s action, what’s coming this weekend, and so much more.

What else can we stir into today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 So Fresh, So Clean. When something hasn’t happened in 15 years, it’s pretty cool.

When something’s never happened, it’s even cooler.

That’s exactly what Emily Bredek and the ODU women’s soccer team have done with a third straight shutout victory to kickoff the 2023 season, taking down in-state rival VCU, 2-0, on Thursday night.

It’s the first 3-0 start for the Monarchs since 2008 and it’s the first time in program history that ODU has started the season with three straight shutouts.

The first two games of the year, ODU’s defense was stifling and limited the opponent’s shots, but Thursday night, Bredek had her biggest night of the year with six saves, including stopping a PK late in the second half to preserve the clean sheet.

In Bredek’s 13 career games played, she’s registered six shutouts for the Monarchs.

Offensively, sophomore Thalia Morisi took a feed from Aleigha Arndt and scored her second goal of the second in the 37th minute to grab the 1-0 cushion.

That lead would hold until the 67th minute when junior transfer Rhea Kijowski scored her first goal for the Monarchs off a feed from Madison Micheletti.

Bredek and ODU’s defense would do the rest to remain unbeaten and not yet scored upon.

🔼 Oh Captain, My Captain. We are one week away folks. ONE WEEK!

Leading us into the 2023 ODU football season will be the six captains of this year’s squad, which were announced this week by head coach Ricky Rahne.

Terry Jones Jr., Javon Harvey, Grant Wilson, Jason Henderson, Xavier Black and Ethan Duane were all chosen to lead the way for the Monarchs this fall.

🔼 Poll Position. I feel like we’ve been here before.

The ODU field hockey team will start the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon in Norfolk in a position they’ve been in each every week since the start of the 2018 - the top-25 of the NFHCA Coaches Poll.

Last year, the Monarchs finished the year ranked #18 in the country and that’s exactly where they’ll start this fall, looking to once again compete in an extremely competitive Big East Conference.

🔼 Drawing Even. Fight, Fight, Fight.

We can tell you one thing. This year’s ODU men’s soccer team isn’t going to be an easy out for anyone and that fight was on display on Thursday night in the season opener against a tough George Washington squad.

GW jumped out to a 2-0 halftime advantage with two goals in the final two minutes of the first frame.

The Monarchs would jump out of the locker room with a near immediate response thanks to the foot of Karan Mandair, who made it a one-goal lead just over three minutes into the second half.

In the 69th minute, Nathan Lam fed Michael Eberle to even the score at 2-2 and that’s how it would stay for the remainder of the evening as the two teams battled to a draw.

🔼 Join The Quest. Bragging rights is always important. Whether it’s with friends or at the dinner table at Thanksgiving. You always need to have some bragging to do.

That’s what is on the line this weekend as the ODU Volleyball team host the 2023 Quest for the Crown, facing off against in-state rivals VCU (Friday at 6:30 pm) and Norfolk State (Saturday at 6 p.m.).

Come out to the ODU Volleyball Center and BE LOUD!

🔼 Plotting The Course. Tough to have a bad day when you’re on the water, right?

For the ODU sailing team, being on the water is a little different than the usual boat trips for the rest of us.

Coach Mitch Brindley laid out the fall schedule for the squad this week, a slate that begins on Sept. 9th in Annapolis.

The Monarchs will be on the water in the area numerous times this fall, so get on out and cheer them on!

🏈 SCOUTING REPORT: GEORGIA STATE

Opponent #12: Georgia State
Date: Saturday, November 25th
Location: Norfolk, Va. - Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium
Time: TBA
Broadcast Coverage: ODU Sports Radio Network

Last Meeting: Georgia State 31, Old Dominion 17 - Oct. 29, 2022
All-Time Series: ODU leads 3-1

Famous Alumni Battle:

ODU: Nancy Lieberman (Basketball Hall of Famer), Justin Verlander (MLB All-Star), Taylor Heinicke (NFL QB), Jay Harris (ESPN Anchor), Ben Bailey (host of Cash Cab), William Fallon (Four Star Navy Admiral)
Georgia State: Will Lutz (NFL kicker), Ken Lewis (CEO of Bank of America), Adam Schultz (Chief White House Photographer), Ludacris (Rapper, Hip Hop Star), William DuVall (Lead Singer - Alice In Chains), Lita (Amy Dumas) (WWE Wrestler)

The 12th and final “Brew” scouting report features a long-standing nemesis, the Panthers of Georgia State, as the Monarchs will be looking to avenge a tough 31-17 loss last season.

ODU had its way early on in the head-to-head series, winning the first three matchups (2010, 2011, 2012), but after a long hiatus, the Panthers won last year’s showdown in Atlanta.

In the four previous meetings, the Monarchs have averaged 36 ppg and will look to exploit a vulnerable GSU defense this season on Senior Day in Norfolk.

While the Panthers finished 4-8 last fall in Shawn Elliot’s sixth season, GSU was in nearly every game as they went 0-5 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

Dual threat QB Darren Grainger proves to be a tough matchup and has six of the top seven receiving threats back as well.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

25 years ago this fall, that picture was shaped after the Monarchs captured the 1998 NCAA Field Hockey National Championship.

At the time, it was the eighth national title for ODU Hall of Fame Coach Beth Anders. The Monarchs would win again under Anders in 2000.

25 years ago, who did ODU beat in that national championship game in 1998?
