Monarch Brew 4/24: The Sun Shines

Today, we're celebrating not one... but two Sun Belt championships over the weekend.

Good morning! When Lay’s potato chips came up with the slogan “betcha can’t have just one” we’re pretty sure they weren’t talking about Sun Belt Championships. But you can’t prove they weren’t talking about Sun Belt Championships… so we’re just gonna use it as our mantra this Monday morning.

Congrats to both the men’s and women’s tennis for capturing conference titles over the weekend!

🔼 Two Good. Old Dominion tennis doubled their fun this weekend, with the men’s team capturing the Sun Belt tournament championship and the women’s team earning the regular season conference title over the weekend.

For the men, the tournament title is their first since 2018 and the team will learn their NCAA Tournament opponent a week from today on Monday, May 1 at 6:30pm ET during an online bracket announcement. And for the women, they capped off an undefeated Sun Belt Conference regular season with a 7-0 shutout victory over App State and the No. 1 seed in next week's Sun Belt Conference Tournament where they’ll face the winner of eighth-seeded Troy and ninth-seeded Texas State on Thursday.

🔼 Looking Forward. Old Dominion women's lacrosse fell 17-7 to Cincinnati over the weekend at Nippert Stadium. Sydney Taylor cut into an early Bearcat lead with a goal, Emily Raech scored for the first time this season, and Callie Culhane led the Monarchs offensively scoring two goals of her own, but Cincinnati’s offense was too much for the Monarchs to overcome.

🔼 Bounce Back. Despite Kyle Edwards blasting a leadoff moon shot early in the game, and Hunter Fitz-Gerald finishing with two home runs and a game-high five RBIs of his own, Old Dominion baseball dropped their Game 3 rubber match against App State by a score of 18-8. Next up for the Monarchs? A get-right opportunity tomorrow in Richmond, Virginia for the first game in a home-and-home series against VCU. First pitch from The Diamond is scheduled for 6:00pm ET.

🔼 Use The Fores. Old Dominion men's golf begins play at the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Championship today at Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippia par-72 course stretching a total 7,190 yards. This week marks the first time the Sun Belt Championship will be played at Annandale, which was opened in 1981 and designed by Jack Nicklaus. The four-day tournament will begin with three rounds of stroke play beginning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The 14 teams will tee off from split tees beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET, with six teams going off from the first hole and the other eight starting on the 10th hole.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

A reign to remember. With men’s tennis having already won the Sun Belt Conference title, a win for the women’s team in next week’s tournament can give Old Dominion two titles in the same sport.

Here’s the question: Who was the last school to share Sun Belt championship titles for their men’s and women’s tennis programs?

👑 ONE BIG THING

The makings of a dynasty. Before joining the Sun Belt Conference, the women’s tennis team for Old Dominion was back-to-back champions in Conference USA. As they prepare for the tournament, the team hopes to secure their three-peat and become a dynasty program.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: South Alabama, 2019

Before Old Dominion joined the Sun Belt Conference, the University of South Alabama won the conference title in men’s and women’s tennis back in 2019.

And congrats for making it to the end of today’s Brew—as well as to the furthest possible point in the week from waking up on a Monday morning.
