Monarch Brew 8/30: Three Cheers!

Monarchs Move To 3-0 On The Court

Happy Hump Day Monarchs. The long wait is almost over.

Kickoff is just three days away.

I think we all remember what happened last year when we took on the Hokies? What do you say we take this show on the road?

But before kickoff, how about our volleyball squad sending a message to some of our other state rivals!

What else can we stir into today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 Three Cheers. Bragging rights obtained.

In just its fourth season, the ODU volleyball program has sent a message throughout the state in the first week of the 2023 season. They are on a mission.

Leading the way against the Tribe was Myah Conway with 17 kills and Bryanna Jones followed with 14 to pace the attack. Teresa Atilano finished the night with a 41-assist, 11-dig double-double and added one kill, two aces and six blocks to her totals. Kira Smith served three aces, Elisa Maggi chipped in seven kills with two blocks and six digs, and Kate Kilpatrick ended up with 16 digs.

ODU faces a big challenge this weekend as they travel to Annapolis for the the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, hosted by Navy. The Monarchs will face off against Maryland (Friday - 4 pm), Utah Valley (Saturday - 11 am) and Navy (Saturday - 7 pm).

🔼 THREE MORE DAYS. The long wait is almost over. We play football in 3️⃣ days people!

A trip to Blacksburg awaits the Monarchs on Saturday and our guys are putting in the finishing touches of prep to do battle with the Hokies.

I think we all remember what happened last season when these two teams matched up.

Now, we’re taking that challenge on the road to Lane Stadium.

🔼 All Tied Up. One thing is certain. This ODU men’s soccer team will fight.

For the second straight game, ODU battled from behind after the Retrievers took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute of the contest. Michael Statham was tremendous in goal, keeping the Monarchs close with six saves on the night and giving ODU the time to get the equalizer from Jonas Schmalbach in the 78th minute to earn the draw.

"We showed great resilience in the second half to claw our way back into the game after a tentative first half performance," said ODU Head Coach Alan Dawson. "We will need to put 90 minutes in the rest of the way. All in all, this was a good result against a very good UMBC team on the road."

🚍 HIT THE ROAD WITH US!

A few limited spots remain for this weekend’s bus trip to Lane Stadium to catch the opening kickoff of the 2023 season for ODU football.

You don’t want to miss out on this incredible experience and you just never know what can happen when the Monarchs and Hokies get together.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

This season, the ODU men’s soccer team is unbeaten in its first two games for the second time in the past five years, the last coming in 2020 when the Monarchs went 2-0-1 to start the season.

With all the tradition of success in the program and under Coach Dawson, what’s the longest unbeaten streak to start a season for the Monarchs?

Got a guess?

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 14 straight in 2003!

That’s not just ties and wins, that’s all wins!

Exactly 20 years ago this season, ODU rolled to a 14-0 record and an eventual at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, before dropping a 2-1 decision to national powerhouse Maryland in the second round.

🦁 Enjoy your Wednesday, ya’ll!
