James, Duane Earn Spots on Preseason Watch Lists

Happy Monday Morning Monarchs. “You never know when a helping hand will change another person’s entire life.” ~ Zig Ziglar

It’s a quote that is a great reminder to start the week and is one of ODU’s finest student-athletes lives by and was honored for late last week. His teammate was also honored in his own accord.

We’ve got all the details and much more!

🔼 Helping Hands. LaMareon James is used to using his hands to deflect passes and catch kickoffs.

He’s also using his hands to help others in the community and last week, he was honored for that work with a spot on the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. The Wuerffel Trophy embodies Danny's commitment to being a humanitarian, while honoring student-athletes who are inspired to serve others and make positive impacts on society.

James is a two-time all-conference honoree as a kick returner and returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns as a freshman in 2021. His first return came in a win against Louisiana Tech, and his second was against Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl. His return against Tulsa was the first ever opening kickoff for a touchdown in program history. Last season, James recorded his first career interception, which was the game-clincher in the win over Virginia Tech.

A Norfolk native, James has done a plethora of volunteer work, including reading to kids at local elementary schools, working camps and feeding the homeless.

🔼 Gimme 10. (boom boom) The Champs (Are Almost) Here! (boom boom) The Champs (Are Almost) Here!

Your reigning Sun Belt Conference women’s soccer champs are on the prowl and just 🔟 days away from kickoff.

And just 13 days away from their home opener!

🔼 These Boots Are Made For Kicking… We’re not sure if Ethan Duane is a country music fan or not, but we sure know that the kid can punt it.

A native of Melbourne, Australia, Duane earned Sun Belt honorable mention honors in 2022, as he finished sixth in the league with a 42.9-yard average and led the league with 28 punts downed inside the 20 with just three touchbacks.

🦁 ICYMI….

It’s safe to say that there’s some getting to know you parts of training camp for the ODU football program.

Nearly 60 newcomers will be donning the Monarch uniform this fall, meaning half of the ODU roster played elsewhere last season (high school, junior college, another school).

Which ones will be making an impact? Which ones do you need to keep an eye on? We’ve got it covered for you in the latest Max with Minium.

🏈 PROMOS, PROMOS, PROMOS

Preparing your fall schedules? We’ve got plenty of promotions coming this fall at Ballard Stadium that we promise you don’t want to miss!

⚾️ SHE’S A BEAUT

Ain’t She A Beaut Clark. Sporting a record that ranks in the top-20 in the country over the past three years, the ODU baseball team is ready for an upcoming new home.

The first full look at the renovations was released this week with construction now scheduled to begin at the end of the 2024 season. The Monarchs will play the 2025 season off campus and then open the new stadium in 2026.

Man, oh, man, we can’t wait!

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

The ODU volleyball team is looking forward to its fourth season of competition in just 18 days.

Rising senior Teresa Atilano unleashed two times that (36) service aces last year to lead the Monarchs in that category.

Who holds the single-season record in that category?

🏈 COUNTDOWN TO KICKOFF: 26 DAYS

ODU great Taylor Heinicke took the field 45 times for the Monarchs.

In 26 of those contests, he threw for over 300+ yards, which is a program record and ranks in the top-10 all-time in NCAA history.

The first came on Oct. 15, 2011 when Heinicke tossed for 360 yards in a conference matchup against Towson.

His highest total came a year later on Sept. 22, 2012 when he reached a still program record of 730 yards passing against New Hampshire. (like any of you didn’t know that)

His last came on Nov. 15, 2014 against Louisiana Tech when he tossed for 302 yards.
