Monarch Brew 10/13: There Goes That Man Again

Verlander Headed To Ninth League Championship Series

TGIF Monarchs! Glavine, Pettitte, Smoltz, Maddux, Clemens.

As a pitcher, when you find yourself in that company, you’re in rarified air.

ODU’s own Justin Verlander is amongst that group in several categories and he’s headed even further up the charts next week.

We’ve got all the details, a sneak peek at the bye week and another busy weekend here in Norfolk!

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

⚾️ There Goes That Man Again
⚽️ Finishing Strong
🏈 Bye, Bye, Bye
👑 And much, much more!

📈 STOCK UP

🔼 On Cloud Nine. As if his resume wasn’t long enough.

When the time comes to retire, there’s no doubt where Justin Verlander’s next stop will be. Cooperstown.

The ODU great and veteran righthander for the Houston Astros is headed to the ninth league championship series of his illustrious career. He reached four with the Detroit Tigers and this will be the fifth as a member of the Astros.

He enters this year’s ALCS as one of just six pitchers with 80 or more innings pitched in league championship history, joined by Roger Clemens (81.1), Greg Maddux (88.1), John Smoltz (95.1), Andy Pettitte (98.1) and Tom Glavine (103.1).

The former Monarch has thrown 80.2 innings in 12 career LCS starts, while striking out 90, the most by any pitcher in LCS history.

Verlander and the Astros will take on the Texas Rangers with Game 1 scheduled on Sunday, Oct. 15.

🔼 Finish Strong. Their eyes are on the prize.

With only two weeks left in the regular season, the ODU women’s soccer team is locked on defending their Sun Belt Championship.

Tonight is one of just two more regular season home games for the Blue & Gray as the Monarchs host Appalachian State in a 6 pm showdown.

ODU finds itself sitting just one point back from the top spot in the Sun Belt and leading the East Division. Overall, the Monarchs are 9-1-3 and 4-1-1 in league play. The Mountaineers are just two points behind ODU.

Leading the unit is the defensive side of the ball as the Blue & Gray currently lead the country, allowing just 0.31 goals per game.

🔼 Bye Bye Bye. No, we’re not talking about a possible N’Sync reunion.

We’re talking ODU football who is GRINDING despite having a bye week.

The Monarchs, who are coming off a hard-fought win at USM this past weekend, are facing a high level second half of the second, which includes an NFL Network date with Appalachian State on Oct. 21st in Norfolk.

All-time, ODU is 7-6 coming off bye weeks, including winning three of the past four seasons.

🔼 Bye Week? What Bye Week? Sure, there’s no football game this week, but we’ve got plenty of Monarchs in action this weekend!

Along with the women’s soccer squad, the red-shot field hockey team plays on the road today (Villanova) and at home on Sunday (Richmond). The men’s soccer team continues to hunt down a Sun Belt title as they play host to UCF on Saturday night.

Volleyball is on the road against Sun Belt power Coastal Carolina with matches today and tomorrow, while the swimming and sailing squads are in action right here in Norfolk this weekend as well.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

Stacking Ws. The ODU field hockey team is red-hot entering another busy weekend with a BIG EAST road showdown at Villanova this afternoon, followed by an in-state rivalry game with Richmond on Sunday.

🎉 TRIVIA ANSWER

Answer: 66.

Yes, you read that right. SIXTY-SIX.

In 1990, the Lady Monarchs went 23-2-1 en route to winning their fifth NCAA trophy. At the tail end of the season, the club began what became known as “The Streak,” a string of 66 wins that spanned the ‘90, ‘91, ‘92, and ‘93 seasons with 48 shutout victories included. In 1991 and 1992, the team enjoyed back-to-back perfect seasons, compiling an impeccable 51-0 record over the two additional national championship seasons.

🦁 Let’s have a great weekend, y’all!
