Monarch Brew 11/15: X Marks The Spot

Lady Monarchs Move To 3-0 For First Time Since 2019

Happy Gameday Monarchs. While most pirates search far more than four years to find their treasure, the ODU women’s basketball team found their X on their own little treasure map on Tuesday night at Chartway Arena.

And now, the Lady Monarchs have accomplished something they hadn’t done since 2019.

What all do we have stirring in today’s edition of the Brew? Check it out!

🔼 X Marks The Spot. For the first time since 2019, the ODU women’s hoops squad is 3-0.

The Monarchs used a gritty, defensive effort to take down BIG EAST foe Xavier at Chartway Arena on Tuesday night, 55-43.

Through three games, ODU has held its opponents to an average of just 47 points per game and under 33-percent from the field.

En'Dya Buford, a junior college transfer, led ODU with 12 points while Mikayla Brown, one of a handful of returnees for the Monarchs, had 11 points and seven rebounds on the night.

🔼 In Good Company. There’s one thing to be included among the best.

There’s a whole another thing when you’ve earned your sport among the best.

That’s exactly what Jason Henderson has done yet again this fall as the junior star linebacker was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award semifinalist this week.

The Bednarik Award is given to the best defensive player in the country.

Henderson leads the country with 154 tackles and is second in the country with 18 tackles for loss. He has double-digit tackles in all 10 games this season and in 22 of his last 23 games.

Henderson's 154 tackles lead the country by 33 over Jay Higgins of Iowa. Henderson is trying to become the first player to lead the country in tackles in back-to-back years since Luke Kuechly of Boston College did it in 2010-11.

🔼 And Another One. Myah Conway continues to make history.

For the second year in a row, Conway was named to the Sun Belt’s All-Conference First Team, making her the first two-time first team all conference honoree in the history of the young ODU volleyball program.

The rightside hitter from Orwigsburg, Pa., leads the Monarchs this season with 439 kills, 3.99 kills per set, 1,055 total attacks, 504.0 points and 4.58 points per set. She is also second on the team in total blocks (90) and is the Sun Belt leader in total kills and points.

Conway became the first player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills last Friday during ODU's 3-1 win at Southern Miss.

🔼 Dialing Long Distance. The only way to be the best is to compete against the best.

ODU’s men’s basketball team used long range shooting to push 14th-ranked Arkansas to the wire on Monday night, but the Razorbacks did just enough to pull out a 86-77 victory over the Monarchs.

Junior guard Chaunce Jenkins had his second straight 20-point performance, finishing with 21 points to lead the offensive attack.

Joining Jenkins in double figures were Devin Ceaser with a season-high 18 points hitting 8-of-12 from the floor, including two triples, while R.J. Blakney finished with 14 points.

On the night, ODU was 31-of-71 from the floor (43.7%), a season-high 11-of-24 from 3-point range (45.8%) and outrebounded the Razorbacks 39-35.

🔼 Battling The Best. Speaking of battling the best, freshman Gianna Dewey did that as well this past weekend for the ODU sailing crew.

The freshman finished 14th in the competition.

Earlier this fall, she took third in the Faye Bennett Women's Singlehanded Conference Championships to qualify for the National Championships. Her highest finish was second place and she finished inside the top-10 four times.

🤔 MONARCH TRIVIA

As we mentioned earlier, Myah Conway earned her second straight spot on the Sun Belt All-Conference first team this week.

Last weekend, she became the first Monarch in program history to reach 1,000 career kills.

In the 29 matches this season, how many times has Conway reached double-figures in kills?
