Rising junior Kelby Williams came up with one of the biggest plays of the season for the Monarchs in 2023.

Williams connected with Grant Wilson for the longest play of the season for ODU in the second quarter of a 17-13 win at Southern Miss.

The 78-yard connection set up a two-yard TD run by Keshawn Wicks that sparked the comeback in Hattiesburg.

🔼 He’s Backkkk. It’s not the fall, but this week in Norfolk has been Homecoming week for a former Monarch.

2017 All-American Jared Young is back in town as a member of the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Young and his teammates are battling the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park and will be in town through Sunday.

After having MLB stints in each of the past two seasons with the Cubs, Young joined the Cardinals organization in the offseason and is currently hitting .261 with seven HRs and 26 RBIs so far this year in Triple-A.

🔼 Award Season. Each year from November through February, celebrities enjoy award season with the likes of the Oscars, the Grammys, the Golden Globes and much more.

Well, there’s no fancy red carpets or award shows, but the ODU tennis programs have entered Award Season themselves.

The honor was the first for both, and Lalami was the first ODU assistant to win the award since Sergey Avdeyev in 2019.

On the women’s side, even a bout with mono couldn’t slow down freshman Kira Matushkina, who was named the ITA Atlantic Region Freshman of the Year this week.

Matushkina, a St. Petersburg, Russia native, finished her inaugural season with a 15-7 record and went 12-4 this spring. She finished the year on an 11-match winning streak and was undefeated in league play.

🔼 Bright Futures. The ODU family is a strong one with an even brighter future.

Recently, four former student-athletes were among the group recognized for their bright futures by the ODU Alumni Association.

Amongst the annual 40 under 40 class released by the Alumni Association were Rick Lovato (Football), Katelyn Makovec (Field Hockey), Greg Tomchick (Baseball) and Dr. Anderson Miller (Football).
